Fluttering noise coming from center vents

I took my car in for service at the BMW dealer and when I was driving home a fairly loud fluttering noise started inside the center vents. I cranked up the fan to max and it got louder but then stopped. Now occasionally it happens very loudly and putting the fan on high fixes it, but you can always hear it a bit. Starting to drive me nuts.

It sounds like someone dropped something into the top vent and its just hanging above the fan fluttering away.

Has anyone else had this problem?

My car had the same problem around winter time. It's gone now but I fear it will be back when the weather gets cold again. I don't know what causes the noise either.
