Calling all 128i owners. I need your honest advice.

Okay, so I have a 2008 128i and the warranty is up in April of 2012. I am already thinking ahead and trying to figure out if I am going to keep the car out of warranty or try to get a newer 1 series that has plenty of warranty left.

That being said, if I am going to keep the car out of warranty I am going to have to upgrade the suspension. I just have to bc if it doesn't have the speed of the 135i I need to at least have it handle well.

However, if I am going to get rid of it come next April, I am not going to touch the car and save my money for a down payment or something.

The only mods I have done thus far include replacing the stock 128i bumper with the 135i one, replacing the stock 256 wheels+run-flats with the 264 style wheel powder coated a gunmetal color with non-runflats, and the bmw perf short shifter. Other than those simple mods she is stock so I haven't put much money into the car as of yet.

The only reason I have held back for 1.5 years on upgrading the suspension is because I always thought I was maybe going to get rid of the car when the warranty was up and didn't want to waste the money.

Just thought I would ask your all opinions on the matter. Thanks!

Keep the 128i!

Hi, I have a 2008 BMW 128i in Jet Black, sport suspension, upgraded speakers, 18s with non-run flats, tinted, that's about it. I love the motor and transmission and the newer versions are going to be the turbo 4 (I think). They may get better mileage, but the smoothness and flexibility of the 6 is wonderful. I have never regretted getting the 128 over the 135, except for the after market is much better for the 135. I don't have enough money to drop a lot of performance parts anyway, so...
Also in BC Canada, the speeding fines are extremely nasty. You can only go so fast on the street anyway. If you want a track car, then a 135 would be better.
The stock sport suspension is pretty harsh - too much compression dampening. I am positive that if you got a good brand of suspension, the ride would be better, the handling would be better and you would be pleased with the results. If you could spring for a 1M, then all of my points fly out the door!
Have fun making a decision.
Dave

I am from Vancouver too and hell yea the speeding fines are nasty...plus your car gets towed if you are 40km/h over the speed limit, none the less I love my 128i. But if the warranty is over soon, I would save up and get the newer 128, 135 or the 1M.

I don't really get the logic of replacing your car simply because it's out of warranty. You really ought to be leasing your cars if you go through them that quickly.

I agree with Bimmer-Bob. You should just hold out until your lease expires or the car is paid off, then just lease a new car for the length of the warranty. Next time, make sure you get what you want on the car.

I bought the car used so I was unable to choose what I wanted. Don't get me wrong, if I was able to get what I wanted I would have chosen the sport package especially for the seats. Either way, I got a really good deal on my current 128i and that's why I purchased it. Now I'm just trying to figure out my next step before I spend more money on the car.

Keep the car

The 128 is a wonderful car and should be very trouble free out of warranty. The same cannot be said for the 135. This is spoken by someone with a 128 but also with a well maintained 22 year old 325 that keeps purring like a kitten. Eventually sport seats will turn up from someone making a track car or from one being written off.

How long have you had the 128i for? I'm out of warranty on my car, but I bought CPO, so I've got that coverage until 4/2014. Either way the car has been relatively reliable, so I'm not concerned about being without it. I need to keep the car for at least 5 years.

If it is still under warranty you can still purchase extended warranty and not have to worry about anything. That being said it would save you quite a LOT of money by keeping an older car (insurance/payment) wise.

My .02

If you are dead set on replacing just lease out a new one or wait for the 2013's.

Yeah it is under warranty until April 2012, but that is coming up sorta soon so I am just trying to think ahead. I will probably end up waiting for the new 2 series to come out in 2013 like the new thread rumors. That being said, I don't think I want to pay 2500 to extend the warranty if I am going to try and get the 2 series when it comes out.

OP: I'd just keep the car.
