If you are remotely interested in modifications on a 1, head straight to the 1M where you will be immediately in the driver seat of a vehicle some 135 owners spend thousands (and lots of time) to (in a sense) replicate.

This is coming from a modded 135 owner. NOW, I also enjoy luxury with an eye on price point... go shopping! Pick the one you are most comfortable with for the right price. If the 1M has not been abused in its short use, this is a hands down winner (IMO).

Let the car pick you

If you're thinking about practicality, remember that the 1M will hold its value exceptionally well. A 1-year limited run will do that. The 135i will depreciate like any other car.

Thanks for all the responses. It is clear what the right choice is. I was leaning towards the 1M already. Just wanted a second opinion form the community.

I will start to widen my search. In Canada it appears that there are 3 available. All from private sellers.

1) Vo at $66K - 20k Km
2) Vo at $53K - 23k Km
3) White at $67K - 8.2K KM

There are used M3's for about the same price, although with slightly higher milage, around 30 to 40K. So going to look at some of those as well.

A brand new 135i fully loaded MSRP is about $57k.

More to follow.

Thanks again!

I was doing this same search when I lost my 335i and could not justify spending that much for this car (or M3)... You can get into a really nice low mileage 135 or 335 for low 20k. I payed 23k for my 08 with 32,000 on the clock. With FBO+Meth it literally runs away from M3's.

For 67k you can get in a 997 turbo!

I love my 135 but what I would give for a 1M.. I would rather have a 1M than an M3. If you have the opportunity, definitely 1M.

I'd choose a new 135i over a used 1M, even if was priced less than a 135i.

I'm assuming you've driven the 1M? Personally I owned both, a 2011 N55 135i and a 2011 N54 1M...I kept the 1M for two main reasons....if I kept the 135 I would be modding it with upgraded suspension, adding a quad exhaust, installing a tune, adding bigger wheels/tires, $10,000 worth of upgrades when the 1M has all of that and more right out of the box. The second reason I kept the 1M is it just feels right, powerful torque, deep growl, tight handling, always brings a smile when I'm driving it...I might have a bad day and 10 minutes later I've got a shit eating grin on my face....the 1M rocks. And it's not a common car. Even here in Germany as I drive around I see variations of the 1series every 1-2 minutes, thousands and thousands on the road. This base I work on has at least 10 128s/135s....it has 4-5 M3s....only one 1M. I'm a member of "M"Flight here and there are probably 400 M3s in the group, I think I'm the only 1M, maybe one other...I've really only seen 2-3 1Ms in the wild here in Germany but literally thousands of 116/120/125/128/130/135s......so keeping the 1M just makes sense...hardly anyone else I meet has ever seen one...hopefully that translates into better values in 10-20 years from now when I grow up and decide to sell...BTW, I'm 52

Just to throw a loop into the question. I found a nice 2011 M3, 10,000 more KM's for about the same price. Trying that one out this weekend.

Problem is too many choices. I'm not sure any of them are a bad idea.

1M. i love my 128 but i can only imagine what a 1M is like. plus you have the resale value, the fact that very few people own one and you'll get looks everywhere if its VO.

You didn't mention what the car is for. The 1m is/will be a collectors car so the value retention is high, but not if you put tons of miles on it. The 135i is more practical if you plan on using it as your commuter car.

Of course to each their own. But in Germany I'm sure you would see all of the 1, 3, 5 and 7 series there compared to what you see in the USA since that is where they are made. I only see 1 other 1er here where I live near Fort Lewis, WA and this area is very city with I-5 being the primary source to get where you need to go. A 1M would be VERY hard to run across as there was not many made for the US or anywhere else. That is one of those collector car's that would gain more value the more it sat with less miles you put on it, that is not what I'm looking for. You would not need $10k worth of mods to make it "comparable" to a 1M, at most maybe $5k.

The 1M is a very special car but it's not for me. I'm not the one that wants to take my M car to the dealership and have to pay that M price for something. BTW, I have never driven or ridden in a 1M but the inside wouldn't be much different that a 128i/135i other than the better suspension and slight power increase. No hate on the 1M but I do like the car.....I'm 28 but know and loves cars.

I'm sorry, but this is silly lol. The interior is different. The look of the car is vastly different. The suspension, the LSD, the very limited production... It all combines to something you can't really emulate by putting extra bits on a 135i. And yes, it would be MUCH more than 5k. Closer to 10k is very correct, and has been proven on these very boards by two different people who are undertaking their 135 -> 1M conversions.

For me the 1M would be the epitome of a driver's car, one of the very last of its kind. So again, if I were in a position to pick between the both, I'd pick the 1M.

You are right, there are no right or wrong choices here in your case. Just make sure you drive all of them before you choose one, they are quite different cars and one should stand out for you.
