Funniest phrases/questions you've heard about your 1er

Decided to make a thread on the funniest / stupidest things you've heard people comment on your 128i or 135i. I'll start off;

Today (4/06/12)

Was at Pepboys getting a floor jack, when i see a Pepboys technician staring at my car. I purchased the jack and went outside and opened the trunk to put the jack inside. The conversation went like this :

Pep boys employee : Hey man, what kind of car is this?

Me : It's a BMW 135i.

Pep boys employee : Oh, it's just an entry model BMW huh? I thought it was a 3 series or something, but it's just a 1....

Me : A 3 series is actually a entry model now, you can lease / buy a 328i pretty cheap nowadays.

Pep boys employee : Oh really? I always thought the 1 is a base / cheap model BMW.

Me : *Starts the car* (i have a 3inch straight pipe catback)

Pep boys employee : Woah! Is this thing turbocharged!?

Me : Yep, twinscroll single turbo, 3.0L 6cyl., has 300hp/300tq.

Pep boys employee : Oh geez! Never knew these things were turbo man! I have an Integra, Vtec swapped engine, it's pushing 230hp to the wheels.

Me : Oh, cool man, i use to drive a WRX.

Pep boys employee : Oh yea? I raced a G35 and smoked him!

Me : Oh, G35's are heavy, well, see ya!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have another incident happen at work. This actually made me laugh.

Employee : Hey man, you drive a BMW right?

Me : Yeah, a 135i.

Employee : Oh, is it fast?

Me : It puts a smile on my face.

Employee : Oh, i drive a Mazda Speed3

Me : Oh cool, never really was a fan of FWD, but they are quick.

Employee : Yeah, it's faster then your car for sure...after all your car is just a 1 series. You should have bought a 328i, those are way faster and more luxurious.

Me : Heh, i could have gotten a 335i, but why buy a car that's heavier, doesn't perform as well, and overall bigger? I bought the 135i mainly for performance, i can careless about luxury features.

Employee : It's still just a 1 series man, my Mazda will smoke your car any day.

Me : Okay, whatever you say.

I find it hilarious that people think the 135i is a entry model BMW.

I get the same sort of comments all the time from friends. I just take them for a quick ride and watch them insert foot in mouth.

Back in 08 I had a bunch of people walk up to me and go

"Woah is that the new M3?"

Always made me laugh

I had someone who calls himself a car guy thinking that the 1 serie was FWD because its the entry level BMW after all. Now he is considering it as an option.

Like you said, the 3 serie is the entry model, people dont realize how cheap they can be when the dealers needs to clear their lot. My 128i with all the options I took is worth more and performs better than most 3 series on the road.

I get the 3-series vs. 1-series comments all the time. I just tell them it shares the drive train and suspension with the 3-series, but is smaller and lighter. They usually figure it out quickly.

Still waiting for delivery. Someone said to me "I do not know why people order foreign cars". He just bought a Cadillac.

By this logic, small = entry level POS, then the Small Z4 must be a real POS!

Yes, I get the 3-series comments all the time. My answer is always something like, "Why would I want the dime-a-dozen 3-series when I can have basically the same mechanics in a smaller and lighter chassis that you rarely see on the road?" I've also had people ask if I imported the car from Germany. Oh, and one guy actually asked me why I put BMW badges on an older Civic coupe. I assumed he was joking, but I quickly came to realize that he wasn't kidding .

Not knocking the 3-series - it's a great car - but they're almost as plentiful as Camries and Accords around here. I'm lucky if I see two 1-series cars a week, and that's if I see the 135i that I work with. When I got my car, I purposefully avoided the 3-series; it had absolutely nothing to do with money.

By that logic, the Ford Econoline E350 must be the finest car you can buy, and anything Lotus makes is utter rubbish.

I never see 1ers. My brother has one, I have one, my neighbor has a 1M and a lady that works near where I live has a 128i. That is all I ever see. I don't know that I have seen any others in the past year.

Honestly when people ask which BMW I have i say "I have an E82"...95% of people won't know what that is...and won't dare ask in order to not look stupid. they just say "yeah, niiiice!".

BMW E82 fits the car much better, and is 100% true.

My license plate is N54 TT. Most people think that it has a 5.4 liter engine in it when I tell them that N54 is the engine designation. LOL. What's more funny is that when you think about it, these engines do have a very similar outputs to many mid 5 liter engine V8's of the mid 2000's.

A couple week ago as I was pulling out of the parking garage here at work there was a bunch of the building crew standing out there in the smoking area. I come around there slowly in 1st gear and make my way down to the roundabout. Well on the way back past them to the street exit, they came running over and waving their arms. I stopped and they ask "Is this an M3?"

Me: No it's a 135

Them: Well it sounds like an M3 man.

Just don't get how a 135 and a v8 sound anywhere near each other...nor do the cars even look the same. I took the compliment on my car and kept on going, but man...people.

Probably a E46 is what they were referring to.

+1 for this thread!

I went to a local dealership here in Austin with a friend that was looking at one of their cars, and one of the salesmen walks up to my friend and I as we are getting out of the car and proceeds to state:

Sales guy: "Hey guy's what brings you in today? BTW, Man that is a sick M3, why do you want to sell it?"

Me: "I don't"

Sales guy: "Well BMW really knows how to build a car."

Me: Nods my head and smiles. "Yes, yes they do."

I didn't have the heart to correct him. This car has a much better case of mistaken identity than my old S2000, with that car I constantly got:

random person: "Hey man nice Miata!" or "I have a Miata too, what year is yours?"

me: (poker face)

Same here, and I live in the DC 'burbs where 3 series are nearly as common as Camrys.

Last year, I passed another 128i cabrio on the Beltway and politely honked my horn to wave "Hello". The young woman driver promptly rolled up her windows and moved two lanes away from me. Maybe she figured I was trying to pick her up - but my wife was in the car at the time!

The other day, I pulled up beside a sharp looking Blue 128i (both of us enjoying a nice Spring day with lowered tops), and hollered out "Nice car". The other driver reflexively said "Thanks" and then broke into a big grin when he saw my car.

It's almost as bad as waving to Harley riders while riding my BMW motorcycle!

"The young woman driver promptly rolled up her windows and moved two lanes away from me." You were in DC. Need I say more? Spend many years in that area. Very happy to be gone.
