Today at the Sunoco in Holmdel:

Attendant: That's a neat little car. Do you get compliments on it?
Me: Yeah
Attendant: I be it's not as fast as the 335.
Me: The 335 engine is in this car.
Attendant: You got to be kidding me?
Me: Laughing as I drive off.

at a gas station this guy in a 328i came up to me and asked me how to open the fuel tank cover. He was looking inside his car for a release switch. I walked over and told him it was magic and opened it. He came back around his car amazed and I just joked and told him you just press the cap and it opens xD.

his car was brand new xD. guy was nice(he was older gentleman) and we had a good laugh.

I have gotten the typical ones so far. Coworker saying he never heard of a 1 series. Andother co worker saying "oh its just a 1 series" and my boss telling me I bought a girls car. (He drives a crossfire)

I have gotten a lot of funny ones while driving my previous car, z3 m coupe. One guy thought it was a maserati...

Happened again today at the gas station.

Attendant: Why didn't you get a 3-series instead of the base model car?"
Me: Because the 3-series is bigger and heavier with the same engine.
Attendant: Oh, I didn't know the base models had the M3 engine, too.
Me: They don't.
Attendant: I thought you said your car has the same engine as the 3-series.
Me: I did, but the 3-series consists of more than just the M3.
Attendant: Oh.

I left it at that, because the guy clearly didn't know what he was talking about.

Oh, and another douchebag conversation I recently had!! A guy with a '12 128i convertible saw me getting out of my car in a parking lot and he parked next to me. When he got out he asked me how many miles I have on the car so far. 56,000 miles, I told him. He seemed shocked and questioned how in the world I put that many miles on the car in only a few months. I let him know that the car will be four years old this June. He seemed genuinely confused and then commented that he thought the 1-series was a new car for 2012 and the salesman told him the same thing. All I said was, "Nope," and then I walked away.

Sales guy: "Hey guy's what brings you in today? BTW, Man that is a sick M3, why do you want to sell it?"

Me: "I don't"

Sales guy: "Well BMW really knows how to build a car."

Me: Nods my head and smiles. "Yes, yes they do."

I didn't have the heart to correct him. This car has a much better case of mistaken identity than my old S2000, with that car I constantly got:

random person: "Hey man nice Miata!" or "I have a Miata too, what year is yours?"

me: (poker face)
Man I used to hate getting the Miata comment with my old S2000. Honestly have not gotten much comment other than some version of "nice car" with my 1er.

"Nice BMW! I didn't know they made these smaller entry level cars. Not bad! FWD? 4 Cyl? around 200hp?"

I couldn't help but die laughing at this guy. Yes... PLEASE think that is what this car really is while you drive away in your 17 second civic. The look on his face was priceless when I proved him wrong on all counts.

I was in a turn out up in the mountains one morning taking snow cables off the rear wheels and this dude rolls up behind me also taking chains off. He asks me why I had them on the rear wheels and not the fronts because he thought it was fwd. I was like uh no it's rwd and is an i6 turbo with 300hp. I was like you notice how my rear tires are like 30mm wider than my fronts?

means nothing. Ive seen FWD Scions with a normal staggarded (bigger tires in the back)

I asked the owner, you know that ruins the handling right? He then lectured me on the value of looks. I think I had my answer as to his biases.

Coworkers give me a hard time for having a "Wind up Matchbox car". Heard some girly car comments as well.

Thanks for defending that car! I considered getting one as 1st "domestic" car when they were giving away the remaining Pontiacs.
Love this thread; slightly off topic, but I will always love Columbus Ohio: driving home from virginia to Chicago lightly modded G3 RX7 (Fikse wheels and 1" lowered only visible). At gas station/convenience in town, pair of older gents relaxing on bench: "Is that thar a race car?" Me: "Yeah, kind of...", Them: "Sure looks fast!"

Very funny thread

When I bought my car, I had to point out to every person that looked at it that this is the coupe-version of the 1-series(E87 is very common in sweden).
They always replied: "I donīt think I ever seen one of those!"

i had my co worker lecture me on why his c280 mercedes sedan is faster than my 135i - not until i got him in the passanger seat and ripped around town for a few minutes that he changed his mind. he then proceeded to tell me hes trading in his c280 mercedes for a new 335i and he would still beat me - that was a year ago and no 335i yet

i love getting the girly comment then hauling ass away from the person who said it - just proves that size isnt everything

+1

The 1 series very common over here in the UK but most of them are hatchbacks. People tend to mistake my E82 for 3 series because they didn't realise the 1er come in coupe/vert. Doesn't help the poor sods mine's debadged

People that ask what I drive (without seeing my car) I tend to just say "1-series" without thinking.

later they see my car and go "oh.... I thought it was the girly one, but it definitely isn't"

At gas stations I always get "how much power does that have?

I say, I'm putting about 400hp to the wheels

they go " :O no way... I didn't expect that!!!"

one time I was talking to some girl on the phone about me getting a new car, her dad was asking her in the background what I got, so I told her a 135. and I hear him in the background, "they don't make a 1 series, he must me a 3 series" she then says to me "he thinks you mean a 3 series" I then reply, "I'm glad I know what car I drive... anyways, just humour him and don't correct him, he's old, so he must be right"

My boss about my 135i right when I bought it

Boss: oh so you couldn't handle a 3series and decided to buy a 1 huh? Small car for a small person. I bet you my Lexus is250 will smoke you (convertible 60k+)

Me: my 135i is pretty powerful and yes I'm small. Wanna go for ride?

Boss: sure. (sits in) you don't even have power seats?

Me: nope, adds more weight.

Boss: okay it's fast. But it's still a small car for a small person.

I laughed at him and his Lexus that he blew 60k on.
