205 winter tire on 8" rim?

Hi,

I recently purchased a set of Winter tire rims and tires (205-50/17 on 8" rim) from Tirerack. Everything seems to look pretty good although the rim does look a bit too wide for the tires. Now from various places I see that the 205 tires are only suited for rim that has a width between 7 - 7.5 inch. I am wondering why the system from Tirerack would actually recommend these sizes then?

And will there be safety problems if I continue to using this rim/tire combinations or should i be thinking about getting a new set of tires (225-45/17) for better fit?

Thanks.

Not a 100% sure, but one tire calculator showed that 205/50/17 fit on rims between 5.5" and7.5"; so they might be a bit narrow for 8" rims.

The Tirerack website says 205/50/17 approved rims are 5.5-7.5 also - for the ws60, maybe check for your tire model.

Isn't 225/45/17 best for 17x8?

205/50/17 is just a bit too narrow for 8" wheels.

215 or 225 would be a better size to use for a 8" wide wheel. 205 on 8" will give a slight stretch.

Thanks for everyone's response. I wish I have read more of the information here before I made the order. To me, somehow I still think if I select a tire size of 205-50/17 from the website, I would not expect it will recommend me rim choices that do not fit within the tire specification. By the way, I have also asked the sales rep explicitly whether the fittings are OK but unfortunately I was not warned about the width might be a bit too narrow. (I was not talking to Gill at the time)

Anyway, like Gill said the tire is just a little bit too narrow for the wheel. If there are no safety issues (?), I might just stick with it in the mean time.
