The Magnaflow cat back may be worth consideration as well.
Congratulations! A 135 is almost an M. Brembo brakes, good weight to power ratio etc.. With respect to cloth tops, I think they are better. Hard top convertibles have very little space in the trunk with the top down. My 128i can take a couple good sized rolling bags + other stuff with the top down. The multi-layer tops BMW uses are also pretty quiet. I'm glad the 1 has a cloth top. Jim

Bob,
Not to jack your Thread, but I am in the same predicament as you, although it sounds like you made the right choice for you. At first, I debated between a 2013 135is and a 2013 M3, but eventually decided on the 1er and I'm now anxiously awaiting the SOP which is taking forever. In the interim however, I found a gorgeous 2006 E46 M3 coupe with very low mileage. I have always loved the E46 M and this could be a once in a lifetime purchase. My only reservation is the maintaince and being without a warranty.

Having owned an E46 M3 I could not have gotten rid of it sooner than I had hoped. It was under warranty when I traded it and while spirited in the sprint was the worst daily driver I ever owned. It was clunky - hated cold weather-like 40 degrees, went through tires like they were paper and the interior leather was weak. I currently own a 135i. IMHO you will get more value for your dollar on a 2009 135i than on any E46 M3 except for the competition package E46 of which few come to market. The comp package put the E46 M3 at a new level - so near the end of production that not too many made it to the US.

Well you already decided on a 1er But I was just going to say had I not been buying new I would have gotten an e46 m3. I test drove a vert e46m3 as well before i ordered my 1er. Basically I think the e46 m is more raw and less of a daily whereas the 1er is a tad softer in more spots and just all around more friendly but still very fast. Both hold their value very well right now so resale wouldnt be an issue.
Like someone else mentioned before that will be the last great NA engine from them for awhile and it was my fav as well next tto the s38 in the e34 m5. IMHO those 2 engine have the best sounding harmonics of any BMW engine Ive heard. So I wanted the e46 more for nostalgia I guess but took advantage of buying new while I could get a great discount and make it exactly how I wanted |

Well the M3 is still an option. I looked at the service history and it appears that Inspection I and II were done at 44k miles (now has 70k miles). So, was the valve adjustment done then? If so I guess it will be due soon? And based on the service history nothing else major was done (always serviced at the BMW dealer) other than a few check engines lights, oil/brake fluid, etc. so should I expect to do the other things mentioned in the thread soon? And if so, what would those cost at a dealer?

Depends who did the Insp. if it was the dealer even the origional owner won't really know if they bothered to really adjust the valves. Was it insp I or II? Either way it's up for another now. I just did Insp II on mine @ 42k.
100% make sure you get a PPI done on it, make sure they actually look at the rear subframe for cracks and if possible ask them to pop the valve cover off and look for broken exhuast cam hub tabs and wiggle/look at the back of the intake cam bolts to make sure they didn't back out. Don't want your vanos to explode right after you buy it. M3F is a good place to start reading if you haven't already. Find a good indy and stay away from the dealer if you buy the E46.

Thanks much. If I drive the car is there any way for me to notice if something is wrong based on how the engine responds, how the suspension feels, etc.?

Bob,
Are you looking at Ms w/SMG? The one I found has SMG but I am concerned by all the horrible threads regarding this transmission. Not so much b/c of the shifting response, but the reliability. I know Forums are a place to complain/vent, but would I be a fool to ignore the high prevalence of negativity regarding SMG. I have found a few folks who absolutely love and have had no problems with their SMGs

I originally wanted a manual (M3 or 135i); however, I drove an SMG M3 and kinda liked it although I am still partial to a manual, which is why I guess I am leaning toward the newer 2008 135i!

I personally had steered clear of it for both reasons, and hence the reason i'm driving a 135 (wife wanted a second automatic car in the house for her to drive). With regards to driving it, make a nice smooth pull in 3rd from about 2500-redline, make sure no stumbles, etc. A quick tap of the brakes, hard enough to put good strain on the car will tell you if front control arms are ready to be replaced. You'll feel a nice little pulse in the wheel and may actually hear it. Also, take it in 1st or second and stomp it, if the back end starts to slide around a bit or wiggle it's rear subframe bushings. My personal experience with the m3s were both would need to be done by about 70k and perhaps sooner. replacing them with poly bushings is the way to go though. Also, if it's been 26k since last valve adjustment it's time for one.

This is some great advice. Unless you do your own maintenance any car with 60k, esp BMW is going to be a killer at the dealer....

Just Made the switch from my 2010 135i AW/CR.vishnu tune rev2.5 v5 (Loved the torque. Monster with the tune.) to a 04' e46 M3 with just dinan stg 1 software. also had the priveledge of owning a 335i before the 135i. although i had always wanted the m3 since the beginning just kinda chose the 335i instead which was a big mistake as its the car i've truly yearned for. anyhow thats a long story, short story is after driving the 135i for about 2 years i'd have to say that it is a complete beast i loved it!~ but the M3 is just a different animal much more pure and to be quite honest it feels just as fast if not faster than what my 1 was. for the 1 not having an LSD and no fender flares killed it for me. So far im loving the m3 and sliding around is alot more fun in this car i guess the only tradeoff was the torque.

I cross shopped the same two cars (vert) and decided on135 because it had a CPo warranty and TQ
Since there is no warranty, is TQ important to you? If so, I'd get the135... If not, then the m3!

I had an e46 M3 for 5+ years, it was a nice car, i also owned a 330 ZHP for a few and it was nice to, but I would purchase the 135i and upgrade the suspension a little and it will be better then both
