Running in 1M

Hi guys,

First time poster here!

I'm expecting my 1M this week, was wondering if they limit the motor for the first few kms/miles?

I remember speaking to someone who had bought a M new and apparently the motor is governed for the first few thousand kms/miles and it needs a service after about 2000kms... Is this true?

Thanks for the feedback fellas

Need to limit it to 5500 rpm up until the first 1200 mile service making sure the engine has warmed up beforehand.

Is it electronically limited to 5500 or are you just suggesting I do that?

It is not electronically limited. He is just saying to take it easy for the first 1,200 miles. Stay under 5,500 rpms and do not exceed 110 mph.

Welcome Killove !

Here's an excerpt of page 24 of the BMW 1M Supplementary Owner's Manual 2011 (USA) which features in the following thread of this website (Sticky "BMW 1M Manual | Catalogue | Presskit | Pricelist"): http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=651059

Break-in period
Note the following instructions for your BMW 1-Series M Coupe that deviate from the description in the Owner's Manual for Vehicle.

Engine and differential
Always obey all official speed limits.

Up to 1,200miles/2,000 km
Drive at varying engine and road speeds, but do not exceed an engine speed of 5,500 rpm and a road speed of 105 mph/170 km/h.
Do not depress the accelerator all the way.

From 1,200miles/2,000 km to 3,000miles/5,000 km
Engine and road speeds can be increased gradually up to a traveling speed of 135 mph/220 km/h. Use the maximum speed only for brief intervals, e.g. when passing.

Transmission
The transmission begins functioning at an optimal level only after a distance of approx. 300 miles/500 km. Do not exceed engine speeds of 5,500 rpm during this period.

Guys I have another question, didn't want to start a new thread...

My BSM has got the silver trimming by the windows, is that a standard feature or is it normally black and the silver an extra? I definitely didn't want the silver and didn't order it, I thought black would be standard? Also, it's chromed so you can't just spray it...

So which is standard, silver or black.. and beyond that, how do I get it black now???

Killove....

I believe the Shadow Line (black trim) is an option. Mine came standard as there were only 3 options available for Hong Kong orders...iDrive, Nav, Lumbar Support. I remember reading the U.S. spec 1M pricing that it was an option in the Americas.

Also, i don't think you should spend the money to have it removed and re-painted. The process of removal can easily kink the aluminum.

I would either order it separately and have it replaced or a more cost effective method would be simply wrapping it with 3M Gloss black automotive wrap. 3M has recently released a new High Gloss Black which looks really nice...just find a good installer.

BlackM...

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice! My 1M is still in its "break in period". I just broke 700kms so i still have a bit of driving to do before its ready. I'm always very tempted to rev the motor!!!!

Make sure to exercise the M and button, and the MDM traction control mode. No need to NOT use them so long as you stay within the other parameters (5500 rpm, 110 mph).

I had the running in service carried out yesterday at 2000Km and I'm sure the engine feels even more responsive and the car accelerates quicker.....

It's maybe just physiological - did anyone else feel a difference??

AC tried to charge me for it too - have to give them 10 out of 10 for trying!!

No general rule - region related.

At least in Germany and Belgium:
  • "Chrome Line" (silver/aluminum) = standard
  • "Shadow Line hochglänzend" (black/glossy) = optional (option 760) (€125.00 in Belgium and €120.00 in Germany)
AFAIK, it's an option you cannot retrofit. So you got to make up your mind before your order becomes final.

Majority of cars on this forum feature the "Shadow Line hochglänzend" trim. But don't feel bothered by it: "Chrome Line" gives an elegant touch to the 1M.

Did you drive another slower car while yours was in for the service, as this will often give you the impression that when you get back in yours it is quicker?... I confirmed with dealer last week that only oils are changed in this service and fault codes read, no DME/Integration Access update is done.
No - didn't drive any other car before getting it back. Also haven't tried the "M" button yet either.

Some of the UK owners reported the same boost in performance but it is probably all in my head. Regardless, the car feels awesome with new fluids

Interesting, fluids do make a difference. I used M button from the beginning Mine had oil & filter change @ 400km though.
I too heard the story about a 1M getting services at 2K :-)

They told me the M cars run a different oil type, specifically for the break-in period.

i never wait for what is stated in the manual. by 800 miles, i bringing the car to redline and going to 130-140mph with no problems. i bring it up to that level by going 3500rpm max on first 300 miles; then 4500 to 400 miles; 5500 to 500 miles; then i take it to redline quickly -never sustained after 600 miles. never have a problem with the 1M or any other cars. in between i would sporadically try to drive the car to redline -so hard to drive cars like this and not feel it to redline

but it is essential to change the tranny fluid. i'm wondering how come only 1.2L comes out and 2L go in when doing the tranny fluid change -seems like it is underfilled from the factory.
