yeah that sounds like a formula that's really scientific since it takes into account the tire tread pattern, width, and wieght of the vehicle

that's a horrible horrible rough rough rough estimate at best

When I was 17 I flipped my first car, a Saab 900, off a dirt road into a tree in Vermont. I had no idea about physics or the value of owning a car until after that. I think teenagers shouldn't own expensive cars for that reason. You gotta learn the hard way to respect what you've got and the value of life.

Like you I was lucky enough to walk away without even a scratch. The car was fantastic...totaled but sacrificial. Glad you're well.

Sorry, its 8.73, not 9.
Water will always be water, no matter where you live. I am not talking about rotation loads, weight loads, side loads, tire type, etc. I am just putting out information from other industries that some people do not know.

If you really want to split hairs, there is 3 types of hydroplaning;
Dynamic hydroplaning
Viscous hydroplaning
Rubber reversion hydroplaning

But thats more math that you do like.

yeah but isn't there some happy medium formula that needs to take into account the psi that the tires are attempting to exert on the ground

the same car with wider tires is more likely to hydroplane than the same car with thinner tires right??

I found this website http://www.jet-jobs.com/articles/hydropln.htmlv

pretty interesting stuff

Exactly! You can always replace a car but your parent can never replace you!

Glad you're okay and sorry about your car. You've had a hard lesson but hopefully a good one. 80mph is too fast to be driving on anything but a dry road surface. I know you're young and it's hard to appreciate that cars and speed can be really dangerous. It also doesn't help that under most circumstances the car you have will make you feel very secure even at very high speeds. Even though the E90 is considered a safe car it's not designed to have you walking away from a serious high speed accident. You're a very lucky young man.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I'm kinda tired of these paternalistic/condescending replies when someone has a mishap. I'm glad the guy is ok, period.

Hydroplaning can be very sneaky. Your'e going along fine for miles and miles and <boom> no traction.

Hope you are able to get your car fixed up and back in tip-top shape soon!

We are all glad the guy is ok and we want him to stay that way. I don't get why you think telling a 17 year old kid who just wrecked his car that driving 80mph in the pouring rain is not safe is paternalistic and condescending?????? I call it giving good sound advice to a young driver.
