Wind deflector question

Hello!

Just bought a 2011 128i manual trans convertible about a month ago. After owning an E36 convertible, I know how indispensable a wind deflector is. Found a used one on eBay, and it fits but I am not sure if part of the latch mechanism is broken or if it's just user confusion. I am used to the non-folding, rigid frame deflector for the E36.

On the driver's side of the deflector, where the red lever is that depresses the spring: should that latch into place before the windscreen is in the car, or only after?

Mine only locks into place after it is installed in the car.

Also, how do you fold it down? By releasing that same red lever?

Thanks!

Sounds right to me.
I just bought a new one last year someone here pointed out a deal on new ones but they had to come from Germany so it took a little while.
