Keep or sell? N54 135i vs Golf R mk7
Hello
Hoping to gather some thoughts re trading my 135i 08 manual 65kkms, for a new Golf R mk7 DSG . My car is stock at the moment, and have been offered a decent trade in price on a new 2015 Golf R DSG. ( app $28k changeover) . I've owned her for 4 years now. I think I'm getting bored. Second option, pondering spending 5k on the Bimmer, ( update brakes, springs, exhaust system, ECU reflash, CAI ), to re-ignite 'the spark' ... Will customising the N54 with the above bring about a new beast - will she drive completely different ? ( I do have 2 years of warranty remaining on the 135 ) I have driven the Mk7 R and loved it. Though AWD, the engine was reminiscent of the old 5cyl VW/Audi engine around the 4-5k mark, and she really does fly ! ( Do prefer the straight 6 exhaust note though ... ) Perspective anyone ?? |

They are two totally different cars. They aren't comparable. If you want a golf, buy a golf.
I thought about getting rid of my 1er, but instead, taking the $28k that I would spend buying a new car, and spend on a project car to pour every cent I have into. That way I have a nice relatively quick daily (the 1er) and a stupidly fast toy that doesn't matter if its off the road for any length of time. The other thing I considered is that I couldn't find anything I wanted for $60k that I would prefer over my 1er except for a newer version, and that would be slower. |

if you can, try seeing if you can find a local modded 1er to drive, see if you fall in love with it again
the new 7R is definitely a very very nice platform performance wise. Still a golf though, and in some ways (like the infotainment system) downgraded from the 6R |

$5K mods + 2 year warranty to keep the N54 would be my option, upgrading the suspension and ECU alone would make it worthwhile, the 7R wouldn't touch it after that.

Yeah I think for a few thousand dollars, it is worth seeing if a moderately modified 135i is what you are after. If it doesn't 'hit the spot' after some basic work, then sell it without any regrets.
If you wanna sell PM me as I may have a buyer for it. |

I went from a MKV GTI fully modded to my 135i. Like the others mentioned - two different cars. I still have the GTI since (my son now drives it) and I drive both, love both!
My 135i with Cobb tune blows the GTI with GIAC tune away! Unless I need to buy something huge to fit in the trunk/boot. Can't beat a hatch for practicality.

Another biased opinion here - keep the 1 er. Im pretty sure the sound inside the Golf R is fake anyways!

I enjoy the 'somewhat' raw driving experience, of a manual 135i. RWD, 3L straight 6 twin turbo - Just oozes 'driving' mans car.
The N54 has so much pre-governed potential. Minimal mods, and you'll struggle to keep traction in 3rd gear. Further to that, they're so smooth to drive, you wouldn't even know you have that much power at your disposal. I tossed between the 6R & 135i, and a RWD 6cylinder with a clutch and stick will win me over every single time. |

All very considerable comments, especially as you have mentioned Weezy. I've decided to keep her, and work on some mods over the next 12 months, my own mini project! Deliverables - starting with what needs replacement: performance brakes, Tyres. Followed by a Cobb V3 reflash, suspension, CAI, Exhaust. Somewhat excited to be unleashing the beast within ! Thanks all for your comments. |

You'll get a sort of biased opinion here ... The golf is a great quick car out the box but soon enough you'll get bored .... Adding a tune in the Beemer will transform the car and then once you get bored you can keep adding moda and will still be well under the $28k you spend for the stock golf ...... Personally I'd keep the bmw and mod it .... But prior to that make sure maintenance is up to scratch before mods commence .... Eg plugs could etc

I'm a fan of both, but honestly I love the Mk7R and would take it over the E82. With a tune, the R is a beast with most cars picking up between 30 and 40kw at all four!. After doing a handful of 'stage 1' Mk7Rs I'm looking forward to our first stage 2 one the week after next with an IPE Turbo Back exhaust + CAI
The downside to the Golf is they are just a little 'safe' with their predictable slightly understeery handling on the limit. Still, roomy interior, practical, good fuel econ and v quick 0-100 time, I'm a fan. OP sounds like you have made up your mind, happy modding |

A more appropriate comparison would be
Mk7 V A45 AMG. In that case, (not having driven either) would go the A45. I'd love to see a full blown report on comparing the both. The A45 is definitely hatch of the moment. |

I rather be seen cruising in a BMW than a VW...
I definitely feel better to be sitting in a BMW than a VW... If lots of track use none of these cars made the list |

^^ It took me over 20 years to convince myself to buy a BMW because of people like you wanting to be seen in one.
