Cobb Tuning is Fountain Valley does pro tunes on a dyno I believe. They're OTS maps are pretty conservative because they need to consider different climates, elevations, etc. You being at sea level in a mild climate, you should be able to make some decent gains with a protune.
You can also make a custom map for higher octanes. A good way to do that would be to go there with maybe 1/4 tank of 91 swill and do that tune. Then next there's a 76 station not to far down the road that has pump VP100. Filler up with hundo and you'll have a tank of high 90's gas. In my Subaru, the difference between 91 and 100 tunes in my Subaru was 62 lbs wtq 40 whp. It was a weekend warrior so I always ran 100 on the streets. At that time I was paying $7.99/gal and getting a little over 14 mpg. Sure was fun though. |

I'm ordering a COBB AP
I'm new to this, and BMWs as well. But it seems to me that GAIC is pretty much the same process as COBB, but with less flexability and end user adjustability. Seems like GAIC just didn't go the extra step and produce a packaged product. COBB is a slick looking little gadget, and you can turn it on or off, make changes, etc . So why should the dealer have the exclusive rights to the input/output of the ECU? I want that access. In the Honda world, Hondata had the strangle hold on ECU reflashing but you had to send them your ECU and it was only for a specific set-up, with no adjustability. I would not even think about a piggy back type tune. DO it right, program the ECU right?
My '08 is stock, and I just want a little more pull with complete reliability. Does anyone know what the COBB does to fuel economy under normal driving conditions? And what about stop and go - does it keep the timing advanced when you're just putting around? |

Got it.
BTW, I cot the COBB AP, and it's kick ass. No dyno or none of that, but it's pretty scary. Much more grunt, mid range, and the rev limiter is higher so the needle swings way up there pushing the speedo way up into the felony zone. I'm trying to stay out of jail. I can here the turbos spinning up too.
