Recall 2011 n55. May
I just got an email about a new recall for 2011 135.
I called and they said it was re "programing". Anyone have details? This car runs FANTASTIC. Its far better than the 08 and my old 335... I would hate to give it back to have them Fuch up my performance... |

Mine has been flawless since day one, I'm scared of any reprogramming too.

If it's running great.....no need to rush in. Reprograming may be, to dial it down, to avoid possible problem. Wish the truth was clear on this subject. Lots of opinions are out there.

This is the only noticeable result of the "programming" recall I had done during service a few weeks ago...
new DSC off icon

I prefer the previous symbol, it was only seen on BMWs.

You still get the same icon on the display (above), just the picture that comes up for ~5 seconds after you turn off DSC is different. Goes away anyway.

Dackelone doesn't have an N55. He has an N54 engine.

I was told by service advisors at the dealer that reprogramming would decrease power output by about 5hp. They said it has to do with increased efficiency, and blah blah blah. I'm not sure how true that is, but I opted out, and there are currently 2-3 updates that show up when I go to the dealer and they scan my key fob.
My car has been running flawlessly for a little over 10 months since purchase date and I don't want anything changed. |

If you have a tune, its best that you update it. Both procede and jb3 are running much better with it.

Yes, I have a N54. I have the newest SW update. I HATE it. Basically it makes the engine idle quieter and pre-primes the HPFP when you unlock the car or open the drivers door. I would think BMW has done the same "de-tune" for the N55's and they did with my SW update on my N54. The engine DOES run quieter... but I never had any gripes with the noises the engine made. What really pissed me off was the throttle response was realy lacking AFTER the SW update. Before when you cracked the trottle open a 1/4 way the car just took off. After the SW you needed to press atleast 1/2 throttle for the same type of accell. To me it feels like the wastegate(s) are partially open now vs before - hence teh lousy performance. My butt dyno would say BMW stole 30 Hp with their new and improved SW update. My advise to you guys would be to RUN not walk away from any SW update. IF you are the type who can feel the difference when you switch fuel octane or brands of fuel... then you WILL notice how BMW has de-tuned your car with this latest SW update. I would not reccomend you getting it - IF - you can duck out of it. However legally I think when you take your car to a BMW dealer in the US they HAVE to prefrom any open recalls. Are you sure this is a recall or it is a TIS/service action ? Dackel PS: Btw this latest SW update also contains anti-tuning SW... some tunes might have issues running with it. My (flash)tune works just fine though. |

Yeah but the icon on screen is different, my currently doesn't show the car with the skid marks, its shows the circle thing with the triangle.

The new SW update changes alot of things we aren't privy too. Not only is the DSC icon different the WAY the DSC cuts in is different after the SW update. Atleast I feel it is not being as agressive as it was before - cutting wheel spin and power in the turns. Also... with the new SW update the turn signals flash when unlocking and locking the car. They flash once when locking and twice when unlocking. I am sure there are lots of other little things BMW has changed... we just haven't dicovered what they have changed - yet. I would still say to avoid any SW updates... but to each his own. I have read that the JB+ will not work on a N55 after they get this SW update done. Also my tuner said the SW line code for the N54 ad N55 contains lots of more anti-tuning codes - to detect and prevent tuning. It was no problem for him to get around those new features. In a way BMW forced me to get a tune bc I really hated the way they cut my engines throttle response and feel. Now the engine performs MUCH better than before. And it makes all teh same loud clicking noises at idle - that I have come to love. Dackel |

Dackelone, my N55 is a 2011 model built in June 2010. It always flashed the turn signals when locking/unlocking the way you described. It has also always pre-primed (or whatever the term is) the HPFP when unlocking the car.. The only thing I don't have is the new DSC sign... Never had it serviced since I bought it... One year oil change is coming up and that's how they told me that there was a recall for programming.
I'm completely lost as to whether to update it or not. Dunno if I'll run into problems being we have 4 years of worry free maintenance here... |

I agree people have had reprograming before and the car has run really sloppy.

I'll ask my service advisor. But I really don't know the guy well since I was only there once.. I'm afraid they'll say it improves the car or not know exactly what it does just that they're supposed to update it..

Don't do it. I felt the same thing Dackel did when I got my N54 done. If a SA is telling you 5hp, then what is it really?

All I know is that with the 335 and the old 135, I loved my car when I got it and didnt like it as much after they "updated" it. That was the point of starting this thread. I think BMW have become the masters of Bait and Switch Let you test and buy a car with "X" boost and performance and then detune you so their expenses are lesser. It's Fuching criminal... This car absolutely kicks a$$ right now. If it were something other than "programming" I would rush it in. Unless they can be specific about what the danger is, I'm not sure how ethical it is to call this a recall... |
