Engine and/or gearbox related noise? - Video

A very odd noise has suddenly started today that appears to be related to engine and/or gearbox speed rather than road/wheel speed.

You can hear it in the video below as a strange "whiring" high pitched sort of noise. If you watch towards the end you'll see, well hear, that it just stops of its own accord.

It hasn't slowly developed or got louder. It's literally just appeared from nowhere. Any ideas?

It's quite pronounced at the 45-second mark, quite noticeable at 1:44 but towards the end you'll note is just disappears..

When you started filming was your engine cold? Might explain why the noise disappears at the end

I can't really hear the noise too well maybe a wheel bearing ?

Can't hear anything other than typical gear noise and exhaust honestly. That and a little turbo noise.

So a couple of weeks ago I posted the video above as there was a weird, albeit faint, noise that started from nowhere that concerned me. I appreciate why people couldn't really identify it as I struggled to capture it on video.

It's been two weeks since my post above and for a large part the noise all but disappeared and I forgot about it.

Until yesterday -

So at 8.30am I drop my car at my local, and to be trusted garage, for it's MOT (Annual UK inspection). The car made no unusual noises in the days leading up to the MOT appointment and made no weird noises on the drive over.

At 2.30pm I get a call to collect the car. I get the MOT certificate and then an advisory for "Engine bearing noise". I asked for an elaboration but the mechanic responsible has gone home and another told me he'd heard it and thought it was a"pulley bearing" that had failed or was dry.

I pay and leave. Upon starting the car there's a weird noise coming from the engine bay that I didn't capture on video but 15 minutes later it's gone.

Today -

I've just dropped the GF at work which is about 10 miles away. On the way there nothing unusual; car sounds fine.

On the way back... A noise develops and gets louder and louder! This time I manage to get it on video below. I'm no expert but it appears to be coming from the vicinity of the alternator or the pulleys next to it.

Any ideas? Granted I was concerned about a faint noise a couple of weeks ago but it's been fine until the garage MOT'd it. What could they have done to cause, or exacerbate, the noise?

Drove it 5 miles to parents and back to get second opinion and the noise is even worse and now smoke is visible in the video -

Sounds like the belt tensioner, but alternator or A/C compressor is also a possibility.

Cheers Moto.. I'm far from an expert but as far I can see the smoke, and noise for that matter, appears to come from the pulley on front of the A/C compressor.

I'm a bit paranoid now as others offline has suggested bottom end bearings which sounds scary.

Just spotted damage to the belt -

Damage looks like it is on the back side of the belt, which means it probably isn't one of the accessories, as they all run on the ribbed side. Pull the belt off and check the tensioner/idler pulleys. One of them is seizing. Could also be the belt rubbing against the front subframe.

needing to find out what was the cause of the issue?
