2-1 misshift
Hey guys, long time no post. I guess my gt4 has taught me bad habits. I went to shift the 1m from 2-3 gear at about 5000 to 4500 rpm, but threw it somehow into 1. The revs went to about 6k, when I momentarily had the gear engaged and quickly pulled it out with the clutch in. Would that technically be an overrev? I don't think I allowed it to fully engage. Just paranoid. It drove fine afterwards. That was the first time I hurt my first born.

Yep, that is technically called a "money shift"! That's when the valves can ouch the pistons and bad things can happen. Sounds like your ok though.

If you went over 7k and you had a ck eng light and a crappy idle the I would be worried...but I think you fine. I usually miss a shift the other way...try for third but hit 5th...bog down...

I did it with my first car when I was just learning to drive. It was a 1980 Scirocco. I went from 5th gear down to 2nd. The tach swung completely around and hit the bottom of the peg that held the needle at 0 RPM. From the position I estimate I hit about 9000RPM in that motor but it was a non intereference two valve motor and nothing happened. If you're sure it only hit 6K you should be fine. |

Thanks guys. Yeah, never hit redline or near redline. No check engine light. Normal performance after. I'm changing the oil today anyway. I have an old service light, so I'll check the obd while I'm at it.
The gt4 almost feels like you can throw the shifter into the gates sometimes, and that's probably why I got a little giddy and pushed forward too much there. Thanks god I realized what I was doing sooner than later in the 1m. |

You've essentially described a textbook mechanical money shift. You were lucky to be going slow enough to where you didn't over rev the engine, causing the valves to hit the pistons as others have mentioned. Since you were nowhere near redline, it sounds like you're okay. Regardless, be very careful in the future. Heads (and engines) are not cheap.

You should always *sequentially* shift the box. Even if you keep the clutch in, don't skip gears. Say you are in 6th and getting off the highway, go 6->5->4->3, clutch out, that way you are certain you don't land in 1st.
In autox, sometimes it is necessary to execute a 2->1 downshift which can be extremely difficult to do smoothly. I do these by double-clutching. http://renkucorp.com/cars/shifting.html

Well, I'll admit I skip gears sometimes too, but I *really* try to avoid it.

For your further enjoyment when I was young I was driving my mom's car when some guy was messing with me. I went into a quick downshift . Hit the clutch and all hell broke loose. It was an automatic. I slammed on the brakes at freeway speed and being pre-ABS locked all four wheels on the K car for a split second. Caught my breath and moved over and let the guy go while I licked my wounds.
