Videos from VIR

Ran with Rezoom Motorsports in the advanced/instructor group last Friday at VIR on the full course. Weather was perfect, and posted by best time yet of 2:14:02...with overinflated tires AND in traffic!

Have several videos to upload, but this is my first time using the new GoPro so I'll give two links for those.

First, I had the pleasure of bringing a friend who had never been on track before. He kind of laughed it off when I told him to give me the thumbs down if he wasnt feeling good when we were out. I don't think he was ready for the speeds in the corners... I included a shortcut on Youtube to 12:52 to see his reaction after the ride

And here is some video of the session where I posted my best lap. Most of the laps are 2:16 or 2:17:

Can't wait to get some proper coilovers in this baby and see what she can do! Stock suspension is way too soft...

I'd be curious to see the HLT overlays on there to see the speeds along with time markers...

As promised:

As I said earlier, much room for improvement. The tires were noticeably overinflated when I was on track, so I wasn't trying to push it like I usually do (I was actually surprised I had my fastest lap this session). Even after a 5min cool down in the paddock, my tires were overinflated by 4psi.

Got held up in roller coaster and hog pin. Normally go later braking into 14, but tires and that "other" N54 powered coupe was in the way

I pledge to bring you guys a 2:13 or 2:12 next season!

Used to run Carbotech XP12 up front, XP10 in the rear. Currently run PFC08 up front and XP10 in rear. PFC NEEDS TO MAKE PADS FOR OUR REAR CALIPERS. I want PFC01 in the rear!

Very nice! What was the difference between the Rezoom weekend from the Tarheel weekend? Did you use a different line or did the weather attributed to the faster time?

Probably weather and maybe my strategy for oak tree (didn't bother with downshifting into 2nd). Could also be the new brake pads, but I honestly didnt push them nearly as far as I did the XP12s, since this was my first time using them. Eager to see how they will perform under late braking.

Cool, I'm really trying to get under 2:10 by the end of the year and I might be able to do that with the help of the weather. I think I need to re-look the line I'm taking down the Rollercoaster and Hogpen also. Think the line my instructor gave me is the safe line after watching some videos.

I think a 2:10 is an excellent goal or the perfect lap for our cars. I think it can be done with the 135 too. hey bavstig, you're running your tune in this video, right?

Yeah, a very modest tune: Stage 1 sport (drive, sport, aggressive). I've run Stage 1 and Stage 1+ aggressive on the street and its a whole different animal. I'm guessing the sport tune gives around 30-40 extra hp vs 90-100 for the aggressive setup.

That explains why you leave me in the dust on the straightaways haha...I'm running no tune, vishnu catted dp, kw v2's, yoko ad08 street tires, and camber plates. I couldn't figure out why were you so much faster on your laptime considering I was faster in almost every corner haha.

So explain how were you faster in the corners when my best time on stock tune was a full 3 sec faster than you..on stock suspension?

Bavstig, comparing the HLT overlay of your 2:14 lap to Focus' 2:18 lap, it shows he is faster in every corner by a few miles an hour. I've been scratching my head too. would love to discuss this more and how that's possible.

Maybe internal gps vs. external? Ie. 1hz v. 5hz so the data is not very accurate. That's my guess. I run an external GPS to get the best readings.

I'm running an external GPS too. Bstig you have more grip than I do with the rcomps vs my street tires. You also have the added benefit of the seats/harnesses and more power. Not trying to slam you or anything here...was just trying to make a comparison and find out where I can improve around the track Your time is impressive and where I'm trying to get to. Seems the biggest diffference between us is from the top of the esses where you pull away by like 4 seconds on the way to oak tree, then pull away on the front straight again.

Big mental hurdle to take fast since the exit is blind, as you know, but if you trust the road will be there then it is a very light brake and early turn. If you run out of road, drive straight towards oak tree there is a ton of grass out there. That wall on the left has swallowed a lot of cars for sure, including one of the VIR owner's I heard. Point is know your exit plan when attacking that corner--it is straight off to the right.

Makes sense he pulls away on the front straight if he's got more power. How much more power? Hog pen is the most important corner on the track tho so it is also a good one to work on for improving lap times.

And yeah to stig, soft set up doesn't reward on this track.

My issue there isn't the mental hurdle of the track. It's the grip of my tires and fighting the gforces to stay in my seat haha. It's really hard to feel what the tires are doing when you're using the steering wheel to both drive the car and hold yourself in the seat. I just have the stock seats and seatbelts. They don't do that great of a job holding me as I'm a bigger guy (6'3 260lbs) as say Bstigs recaro's with harnesses do haha. I know the car is easily 2-3 seconds faster a lap there but I need to stay in my seat. I'm faster around the right hand turns than left ones b/c I can brace myself with the door some vs flying into nothing on left hand turns.

Seats and a roll bar are on my winter project list b/c of that fact.

I use my legs to hold myself in the seat and I'm pretty aggressive in the corners. I'm also running AD08s and love them, the amount of grip is unreal. I see no need to move to r-compound.

I also brace myself with my knees, however, my upper body still slides around. The M3 has slightly bigger bolsters than the 135. Plus an issue i have to deal with that you don't is taking my left leg off the bracing area to depress the clutch pedal haha

I get tossed around so much I had to buy a rib protector. got bruised up a few times on this track that is particularly tough on the body. sometimes I feel like I am holding on to the steering wheel and dear life as I get tossed around. would love more supportive seats with a five point harness.

No I don't think it'll be immediate that i'll gain that time. But i'll help with me being comfortable in the car and being able to better feel what it's doing. There is some mental factor while driving around the track as for trying new speeds as I know i have to drive the car home. Having a bad off track excursion wouldn't be fun being 4 hours away from home.
