Slowly things are getting cheaper. But remember, Toyota is a bigger brand, has more vehicles, thus can supply and repair at a cheaper price. If Toyota was selling at BMW costs for vehicles and the like, it would be nearly on par.

Lexus leverages Toyota economies of scale. Many of the parts used in a Lexus are simply Toyota parts.
BMW is a stand alone company with far fewer sales. On top of that, they have very high level cars that are unique in the parts used. Many of the top brands do as well. Even Audi, that has VW as a higher volume brand, doesn't share that many parts among the brands, and their top cars are also unique in parts and low volume. It really is not a fair comparison.

At the same time I'm at my ninth year of ownership of the 1er which itself is ten years old with 121,000 miles and I'd say my repair costs including scheduled and unscheduled costs have been around $8,500 USD. They have the BMW 328i at $15,600 something over 10 years (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article...ve-cars-to-own) in a separate article. Based on my experience these numbers are a bit on the high side and can be kept lower by being a smart consumer and finding a good indy mechanic. Any way at $8,500 USD in maintenance costs and the original purchase price of my 1 year old CPO I've paid a whopping $292 USD a month. Not that bad for a BMW IMO, although of course it would have been lower if I had bought a Toyota but zero regrets. Said before on this forum before many times but the price premium for the BMW is worth it given the driving performance vs a Toyota or Honda. |

I am surprised Mini (and VW) are so low on that list. Really surprised.
Also my wife owns a Kia Soul and over 9 years of ownership we spent NOTHING in repairs and abut $2000CAD total in regular/preventive maintenance. |

$0 in labor. Except for that alignment that I did better myself (a solid waste of $100).
Minimal parts costs (mods not included), one rear wheel bearing, and one front hub assembly, brake pads, rear rotors, the standard post-purchase air filters, and oil changes. This after 10k miles added to a 160k mile car...

They all closed within ten years ago, which is the period the data covers, but yes, that does raise questions...

Happy to share my cost of maintenance.
I have owned my 2011 135i since new (1/2011). Here are my costs of service and maintenance for 58,000 miles over seven years and two months. I have not purchased an extended warranty, nor have I had to replace my water pump or OFHG. $1,381 General Maintenance (including my DIY work) $ 562 Windshield replacement $1,983 Tires -------- $3,926 Total Cost This works out to $45 per month and $0.068 per mile. I have to say, I am pretty happy so far. Peace... Mack

I do question the list, as Ford, Chevy and Acura are ABOVE Volkswagen. I spent 15 years working at a VW store, and can tell you first hand that they are fun to drive, but are, lets say, very maintenance intensive. Now that I'm at a BMW store, what I see daily makes me feel like VW is like a Toyota in comparison to BMW. Lets face it, our cars drive and handle great, but long term reliability and affordability was never the plan with them in the first place. There is a reason they say that a used BMW and a new BMW cost the same.

Yeah, my dad had an E39 (which could've been mine) but it had 270k miles on it (but it was an OBM 540i Sport pack, 6-Speed, with Sty. 19s) and it was just time for it to find another home (or a crusher ). He did a resonator delete and a Super-sprint muffler. It sounded NASTY (good way), but he reverted back after two weeks because of the miserable drone and un-sleeper nature of the noise...I loved that car, I learned nearly everything I know about maintenance from it (had PLENTY of opportunities).

I can't disagree with any of that, except maybe reliability and being better, but I have no statistics or graphs or maths-y things to look at. Though, there's also something to be said about reducing opportunities for distraction; you can't be playing Flappy Fridge (?) while rowing gears, operating a clutch smoothly, and rev matching to perfection. It's a good thing for a new driver (ME!) to start-off with, I have to think ahead, choose the right gear for the circumstances, etc. And, it's supremely rewarding when you get it right and startling when you get it wrong (these gears grind extremely violently, I learned that lesson VERY quickly). EDIT: I'd take manual windows, they weigh less. I hate drum brakes, because they're so hard to fix. Solid axles are heavy and I hate the way they handle.

I guess I'm just old-fashioned, even though I'm (almost undoubtedly) the newest guy on the block! Some (my side) will resist change, and some (your side) will accept it and champion it, until us (my side) gets it through our thick skulls that our way is not the fastest, not the most reliable, not the most practical, and not the only way to enjoy driving.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with being a little silly and having some fun every once in a while. It helps keep me young at heart and not take myself too seriously all the time.

I totally agree! But silly and fun loving is not, IMHO, related to maturity.
