Getting production number

I ordered my car three weeks ago. The dealer told me it received a production number, but he is not allowed to give that out... Is that true, I see some of you got theirs. :iono:

crazy talk. your dealer is either misinformed or ... well ... worse. when you call BMW to check on the status of your order they ask you for your production number.

Did the dealer give you any document e.g Vehicle Inquiry Report (which contains the SA/ dealer's name, the status of your order, your name and the options you chose) to show he actually placed the order with BMW AG? Tell the fool you need the production number to register online with BMW's Owners Circle so you can monitor the status of your order. The dealer is supposed to give you the production number.

No, I got nothing like that... I received a handwritten order form with my options written and my deposit. But that is when I actually went there and placed the order...

Yeah, what he said!

My dealer was really excited about it and couldn't wait to call me with the production number!?

I think your dealer is full of :bs:...

I will ask him one more time, then take it further, I guess. I would think BMW dealers would be more responsive/honest.... or I will take my business to the KIA dealer across the street!

^ Ask him for the production number and the Vehicle Inquiry Report-- tell him to email the Report to you. If I were you, I would seriously consider getting a refund if the dealer cannot disclose the production number or provide the Report.

Ok, I just emailed them and got a response of something like.....

"I don't have a production number. I got "bumped" by someone who was on the list. We will still be fine for late April. I should have a number late January/early February."

I placed the order on Dec 27th, and was led to believe that order was placed in the computer and production date set for week 9. Should start getting mad? Or is this normal? Maybe I'll call the sales manager tomorrow.

Sorry man, but sounds like your rep is praying for another round of allocations to actually place your order on. You should have gotten a prod number weeks ago if you were first allocation.

Was Dec 27th early enough to place the order to be on the first allocation.... This is just frustrating.

Mine was placed Dec 18th and my dealer only got 5 allocations which all were spoken for and turned into orders that week. I have read though that some dealers did receive there initial allocations later though, so you may be OK.

First the dealer says: ... it received a production number, but he is not allowed to give that out.

Now he says: "I don't have a production number. I got "bumped" by someone who was on the list. We will still be fine for late April. I should have a number late January/early February."

Can this guy be trusted? I think Dec. 27 was early enough for you to get a car from the first allocation. The dealer should have made it clear that there were other people ahead of you on his preorder list, hence you might not get a car from the first allocation, instead he told you he had a production number for you, but couldn't give it out. What a load of :bs:

exactly. i'd go in for a face-to-face and if they can't give you a straight answer find another dealer.

I would check with other dealers and see if they have any slots available for their first allocations if you want something before June. Personally I would be mad at the dealer and find somewhere else, especially if I lived where there were more dealer options.

Well, thank you guys for all your help. I ended up writing an angry email to my sales rep and got a call within 10 min. Apparently there was a "list" that they had to go through to make sure those people still wanted the car.... so there were enough people on the "list" that I did not make it. Now I am on top of the list for the new allocations. The new allocations will come out in the last week of January, first week of February. I will get a production number then, the car should be here in the mid to late April. Does this sound right? Or should I call other dealers, there are really no other BMW dealers really close by though...

I had to go 150 miles to a BMW dealer that would take my money and secure me a 1st allocation spot, all 3 of the dealers around me were jerks about it so I said screw them. I say check out the others around you, one may even have a 1st spot still.

I agree with T'dogg, I think you should call around to see if you can still get a car from the first allocation. But if you decide to stick with this, seemingly unscrupulous, dealer make sure you get whatever he says in writing. Good luck.
