Free Oil change from dealer :P
Today I took my car to the dealership to get my winter tires swapped out for my summers.
While i was there I purchased 7 quarts of Oil + the filter for my car intending to do the oil change later on. As I'm waiting for the them to finish the the tire swap my SA comes and shows my my wheel lock key and tells me"the impact gun broke your tool. I have to order another one." So at the moment 2 of my wheels are off and 2 aren't So Im pissed that they 1 broke my tool, 2 wasted my time and 3 i need my tires for when i go to the drag strip wednesday. So I'm like when can you get a new key, he's like tomorrow morning. I'm like fine, give my my car back and i'll be on my way. But wait I said, I want a free oil change including parts. Guy is like let me talk to the manager, he comes back and sure as hell they said they'd do it as "good will." Heck, i'll save the 7 quarts+ filter for the next 7k miles... So with the breakage of my wheel lock key came a free oil change woot =)

Well, "good will" to me is when BMW does something proactive to address a customer concern. I think giving you 20 minutes of tech time to change the oil was more than fair of them, too bad it took a manager to sign off on it.
In my experience, the concept of "good will" doesn't really exist any more with BMW. Once you own the car the best you can hope for is that they honor the warranty terms without putting you through the ringer. At this point I would settle for that outcome, lol. 'Grats on making them own their mistake. |

I disagree since I've been on the receiving end of BMW's good will several times now. Most recently, they provided a replacement driver side window which got scratched as a result of a pebble trapped between the glass and the outer rubber seal. I could list two other instances in which other, more major repairs were undertaken on their dime out of warranty as "good will".
On another note, and please correct me if this is not true, I thought I read somewhere that BMW wheels were not supposed to be mounted using impact wrenches.

I called my dealership yetserday to make an appointment to have them check and replace the cracked mirror in my passenger side rear view mirror of a 2 month old 135i. The SA says hang on a second. I think he's probably checking the schedule. Instead he comes back and quotes $277 for the glass.
Doesn't even consider the possibility that maybe it's a warranty issue. What a posture to take - out of warrant until proven in. Here's your bill sir... Good will.... Humbug. |

Sounds like good will is dealer dependent. My issues were covered by BMWNA, not the dealer. To the my SA's credit, he was willing to go to bat for me each time. We have a good relationship and the service department their is top-notch but not inexpensive.

Every 15k miles...which is far too long in my estimation. I'd think 7500 is a good point to do it and keep it freshened between dealer visits.

I did a break in oil change by myself at 1200. My car is now at almost 8000 miles and I'd like to do a an oil change. Next oil change they pay for @ 15000 miles . Looks like I wont have to use my 7 quarts and filter for another 15k miles, might as well return it.

I am not much a fan of locking lugs for this reason and others. I just take the risk of potential theft. But then again, you may live in a worse theft area then myself. Good luck. |

A similar thing happened to my previous car where a dealer tech used an impact gun to tighten the wheel locks which were then impossible to get off. Since then I take the wheel locks off my car and replace them temporarily with regular bolts before taking the car in for service.

my first service went at 17,000 (oil, cabin filter, wipers). my next one was another 9,000 (oil, cabin filter, brake fluid flush) and my counter says 6,000 till the next service not sure what that'll be. I used to be an every 3,000 miles guy. but now that I know a little bit more about machining processes and precision I'm okay with going longer. these motors aren't the same as the 3,000 miles oil changed carb'ed motors of the 60's. I figure if BMW says 15k, then i believe them: they designed the car. AND they know that if cars start falling apart at 50,000 miles no one will buy them anymore. so if you're thinking they do that to save money, they'd be losing futre sales and repeat customers if their predetermined service intervals caused unnecessary wear shortening the life of the car. |

I have been using anti-seize compound on my wheel bolts and brake caliper bolts. I install with a torque wrench. About a year ago, I had a blow-out and it was a relief to be able to remove the wheel with the lug wrench in the trunk.

It's as if between 2005 and 2006 bmw mad a revolutionary change to their engines which require less frequent oil changes... They only do it every 15k as a marketing technique to act as if they provide "FREE maintanence" prior to 2006 they always recommended OIL changes every 7500miles and would also give you a list of what was wrong when you'd bring the car in. Now they really avoid it and only do it every 15k ... either ways this is getting off topic but in my opinion Every 7500k is fine for me. You can do whatever you like with your car.

They are YOUR wheels! You paid for them! It's not your fault they damaged them and they are still yours. Even if they didn't replace them, they would have had to pay for the damage and you would have just bought new wheels AND still had your old ones! You better get your old wheels back! I hate dealerships that try sneaky stuff like that. I've had upgraded wheels before and the dealer tries to keep the take-offs and not give a credit.

This is exactly what I think when people say BMW changed their service schedule just to save a few bucks. My understanding is the interval change coincided with the switch to synthetic oil, and obviously as you mentioned, increased precision in manufacturing certainly plays a role. The money they would save in the short term by underservicing vehicles would be NOTHING compared to the damage the brand would incur 10-15 years from now when all these cars stop running. A counter argument to the idea that BMW is skimping us on service now that it's free is that perhaps BMW recomended unnecessarily frequent service intervals when it was on the customers dime. In any case, you can't really change anyone's mind about this - it's like a religion. We'll follow our owners' manuals and they'll do what feels right to them and we'll all feel better about ourselves. |
