I really do not understand why so many folks think the use of this name or that name now is sacreligious because it was used on a different car somewhere in the past.....

Does it make your car any less special? No....not at all. Trust me--your '00 M Coupe based on the Z3 will never be confused with this car......
You're right that they don't make the Z3, or the original Z4 anymore, but both previous M Coupes were two seater hatches (oddly not the traditional coupe per se), and both were rather unconventional for BMW. The M-ish version of the 1er will be a more traditional car more akin to various versions of the M3.

I suppose I'm a bit of a hypocrite as I don't mind them using M1, but think M Coupe would be wrong. I'd hope no one confuses a Z3 M Coupe for any version of the 1er, as I can ensure you which I'll always prefer. The new M Thingy might be interesting, but naming it the same thing as a very different car that's only three years out of production would be much more confusing than naming it the same thing as a boutique car thirty years out of production that most BMW buyers know of about as well as the Isetta.

I'll be a little disappointed if they don't go with ///M1, but I'll still get the car even if they call it ///135isMsportCSiDriveTii. I'll settle for ///M Coupe or 1///M, but anything else is just plain stupid IMO.

Fair enough. My dad has an 07 M Coupe and I don't really know how he would feel about that name sitting on the back of a 1er.

Something like 1M, M1, M coupe just makes sense to me--anything with 135 in it just seems stupid.

That's probably right, I'd go with the name M10 for an M1 successor. Still, my point stands, and the introduction of the 1 series could very well have meant that there might never be a BMW car called M1 again. There's too much confusion either way.

Alot of my friends drive bmw's, like 6 off the top of my head. M5, two m3's, a couple 335s and a 525. I can assure you that none of them have any idea what the M1 is..............

Call it an M1! SCOTT!

I will place my bet on the name M135i or M135
Re-read what I said, both the models that have reused the GTO name are not the base model, the 288GTO was the forerunner to the F40, or in other words the peak of Ferrari technology at the time and the 599GTO is currently their most expensive model.

I am a big fan of short and sweet. I loved it when a 325i was really a 3 series car with a 2.5 liter, fuel injected inline 6. Very easy to understand, very simple...

M1, 1M, M Coupe would all work. Anything with 135 in the name is just retarded--because this car is CLEARLY not going to be a 135. It will be very different, distinct, and special, and should be named accordingly.
You must be total pissed off with BMW in recent years, what with their misleading number system they have been using.

It is just annoying--I can look at it and tell what the car might have underneath the bonnet, but only because I pay attention to BMWs generally...

It is like when they started putting "X-Drive" on the side of those with all wheel drive--it just clutters the car and looks stupid. A simple "x" on the car designation would do the same thing....

Like I said, simple is better, at least for me.

I think it should be the ///M1. If and when the new BMW supercar comes out, it can just be called the ///M. This would leave the ///M offerings with a clear, consistent and understandable line and naming system. And that is why BMW absolutely won't do it. BMW seems to enjoy setting up naming schemes and then finding reasons not to follow them.

I'm hearing so much concern over the name of this car, quad exhaust, side gills. . .

IMO, the only thing we should be worried about is the performance benchmark of this car.

You can always dress up a 128 with 'M1' bits and it will be a ton cheaper as well.

A 4-Seater-Front-Gazoline-Forced-Induction-Inline-6-Engine-Rear-Wheel-Drive-Sports-Car deserves the M1 badge more than a 2+2-Seater-Rear-Mounted-Diesel-3-Banger-Engine-All-Wheel-Drive-Electric-Pseudo-Supercar.

At least we won't have to suffer with 2 cars having the M1 logo. Whew.

Speaking of side gills, I'd almost prefer the car to not have them as they are becoming a played out design trend. Obviously on the M cars, they are intended to be functional, but faux vents/gills are also popping up on everything from Buicks to SUVs. People are even buying stick-on vents from Pep Boys which look so tacky.

That is probably the best, and most logical, point. There is no reason not to name the 1 Series ///M in the same manner as every other BMW series car....

Because unfortunately, BMW didn't build a whole lineup of mid-engined 'super'cars and named them M3, M5 and M6.

The Question you have to ask is what is the "Obvious name"?

Because you will be surprised...

This weekend is a glimpse into the Future for BMW...
From a design point of view of looking at the Past aswell as the Future.

And an interesting vision into electric mobility for the mid-level luxury market...
