Spare Tires?

Anyone found any good and decently priced spare tires besides going the full size tire route via tirerack? I know leatherz sell the spare tire, but $300 for a spare tire seem a bit too much.

NOTE: See page two and three of this thread for more spare tire options!!!

Mobility kits mess up both the tire and the wheel, shops hate working with wheels covered in the mobility goo and getting it completely removed from a wheel can be tough, leading to challenges with balancing that wheel.

I've gone 9 years with no spare and no run flats, but my M Coupe came with lifetime roadside for tires. I'd guess that the 1er doesn't get that benefit if you remove the run flats, but AAA is still cheaper than buying a spare if you're concerned about it.

don't like the idea of pumping stuff into the tires. repairing them afterwards would be a challenge.

Even with AAA or towing service, you're still out of a car when its been towed back home. Busted tires = no ride = no work = must take PTO. I still need a spare tire so if anything does happen, I can still drive the car to work on the spare. Order the tire online or bring it to a tire shop to get it replaced.

I'm fine with the extra weight of a space saver spare. A full size spare would be so much cheaper, but it'll just hog up the space in the trunk, rendering it almost useless.

I just spent the $325 for the compact spare with the insert (jack, tire iron, wheel chock) from the 550i. I got it from Tischer.

The only way you are going to get a space-saving spare for less is to find a wrecked 550i out there and grab its spare.

If it is not a blowout, you can keep adding air untill you get it fixed.
When was the last time you had a blow out?
I occaisionally pick up a screw or nail. When I notice them, I get them fixed.
No way am I lugging around a jack & tire...

I picked up a donut spare from bavarian used parts for about $75. Added a scissor jack for another $15. I only use it when I'm driving around with my track tires on. Just about any used bmw parts dealer will have them.

I tried look for 2004+ 5 series on junkyards and had no luck everywhere. doubt I'll find a 2008+ 550i out on the wrecked lot. Good to know the 550i spare works.

I was always afraid to drive around with a puncture on the tire.

The one for the 550 is bigger, it is not the same wheel and tire size. I sell the one I sell because I wanted the smallest one that would work in order to save trunk space.

Width and diameter. I can’t remember what the differences are though.

Here's the 5er spare, looks like it's a 4x17, et18:

Looks like you can also get a 3.5x17 et30 from an E46:

I'm not sure what car this donut was from but it measures 125x80x17 with an et of 30. Plenty of clearance on the brakes as well. I ordered it from Bravarian a year ago or so. I'm sure it was very old but was in perfect condition - never used.

just took a gamble and ordered a steel wheel with tire from Bavarian. Space saver size is 4Bx17 ET:18. Comes with tire and cost me $189 shipped.

Will give you guys update once I get the package.

Hi Guys,

I have been debating this spare tire/fiasco thing - too! I really am leaning towards buying an extra 17x7J wheel and getting a cheap 205/55HR17 summer tire to go with it.

Maybe I can find a nice aftermarket wheel in 17x6j and go with a 195/65HR17 ? Does that size even exist>?

When you look on RealOEM, there is a mini spare listed for the euro 130i e87.

here it is--->

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...73&hg=36&fg=95

RealOEM also shows a spare tire option for the US 135i too!!! WTF!!!

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...73&hg=36&fg=95

for the 135i:

Set emergency wheel with tyre 125/80R17 part # 36110443369
it does not show a price though I suspect its around $200, plus core ???

...for me, it makes NO SENSE carrying around a spare tire that can only be driven on for 100 miles or so. I want a REAL spare tire in the smallest size available. That means a 17 inch wheel to clear the 135's front brakes. I want something to drive on for a week or two until I can find/buy a replacement tire!

I believe the Tischer spare kit is from a e60 550i. Take a look at this link--->

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...16&hg=36&fg=95

Has anyone bought these wheels?

BLACK STEEL EMERGENCY WHEEL 5JX18 ET:14 36116768861 $79.92
or this one?
BLACK STEEL EMERGENCY WHEEL 3.50BX17 ET:30 36116750007 $61.00

Q#1). What is the offset we need to clear our front brakes? I am think ET14 ???

Q#2). Does anyone make real normal tires in these small narrow sizes? 125/80R17

I think IF all else fails, I will just buy a steel 17 winter wheel from a 130i (or e46 M3) or a aftermarket RIAL six spoke whee (both in 17x7J size) and then buy a 205/55HR 17 summer tire. Any thoughts?

BLACK STEEL EMERGENCY WHEEL 3.50BX17 ET:30 1 36116750007 $61.00 +core

The spare tire came a few days ago and finally got the time to test fit the spare tire. The spare came with only a thin layer of shrink wrap with 2 cardboard on each side of the wheel protecting the rim. The tire was brand new and stuff have it rubber stubs. It didn't come inflated, so I pumped up the PSI to 40 (gave it some extra so it won't go flat on me when I need it while sitting in the trunk).

My initial look of the spare, it looked huge and didn't look like a 17", but its marked in the tire and spare. The spare tire fits fine on my 128i front (stock height). I have about 1" gap between the brake caliper. With the spare in the trunk, there is still plenty of space. The spare weighed in at 33 LBS (based on UPS shipping tag).
