3rd Gear to 4th

Just like the title says...has anyone else noticed when you shift out of 3rd and are about to shift into 4th the shifter pulls to the left and tries to go into 2nd? I usually shift around 2.5k rpm, it doesn't happen every time but it is quite annoying having to fight the shifter...

I have never noticed anything like that. Get a new shifter that is not so weighted.

I haven't had that issue. I take it you are still using stock shifter?

BMW Short shift kit and no issue like that here, sounds like there's a problem with your linkage.

I've never had anything like that with my 2011...could be driver habit learned from a previous car?

OP - that is not normal. Either your shifter needs to be adjusted or maybe one of your motor mounts or trans mounts is bad/broken and the engine is leaning slightly to one side cauing the linkage pull. I would go have it checked out at a BMW dealer.

previous car was a AT Honda accord..

The shifter basically pulls to the left it is like I am arming wrestling it...3 to 4th is almost a straight line down so when it pulls left it is very easy to notice...

Everything is stock except for the exhaust, I thought it was strange I guess I will have to have BMW check it

Got the BMW SSK and I didn't notice this at all before or after the install. 3rd to 4th goes very smoothly, I can literally just tap it with the tips of my fingers and it'll go by itself.

Have it checked out

Are you sure you're not doing it?
Try this: Get into the car while its off, put the shifter into third and then clutch in and just use one finger to pull the shifter out of third.
Does it move to the side?
If it does you have a problem.
If it doesnt, the next step is to try it with the drivetrain under load.
Disclaimer: This is a potentially dangerous thing to do if you are not paying attention. If you are not totally comfortable doing it, dont. If something happens I take zero responsiblity.
Pick somewhere nice and open (and empty, try this on a saturday morning or very late at night) like a large parking lot, get the car up to fourth at like 30 make sure you have nothing in front of you for a while.
Now floor the accelerator for just a second to load the drivetrain, look down at the shifter, clutch in and just pull the shifter out of gear with one finger, as you did last time.
If the shifter didnt move last time but did this time than you have a loose motor or tranny mount which is causing things to move around under load.

Unless Im racing, I always use two or three fingers to go from third to fourth: so the normal case is that the shifter should go directly down into fourth with no lateral play at all.

If you do the loaded test and see no play in the shifter then it's most likely just you're technique. Sometimes you can think you're going in a straight line, but that straight line isn't pointing down, its actually pointed at you meaning that it's diagonal to the line that you want to be straight.
Human perception is a funny thing, especially when you're making a mental spacial analysis without the use of your eyes, just relying on feedback from your muscles.
I had to get used to changing my grip going from 3rd to 4th while racing, because I always tended to pull the shifter towards me, towards second.
I would run into the bridge of the H and miss third gear.
And then the STi or the rustang would win and I would be sad =*(
Now when I shift heavy from 3-4 I actually grab the left side of the shifter to apply a little counterforce to my natural tendency to pull towards me.

How are you holding the shifter?

never wrap your hand around it like you're about to jerk off.

For 2-3 just push forward with an open hand, for 3-4 just pull pack with your fingers, maybe wrap your fingers around the shifter from the left so you aren't pulling it left?

what if you typically jerk off with two fingers? How should you hold the gearshift? Is there some kind of advanced European grip?

Nope never...2011 6mt and shifts FLAWLESSLY...in fact, the engagement of the gears is so positive that in 7 months of ownership I have yet to miss/scratch a gear!

+1

People say it looks like I'm slapping my shifter when I shift. I guess most people grip it to shift.

Have to agree with the stud. After 5 months I have never missed a gear. Just a positive touch and the shifter smoothly goes where it needs to be.

try shifting with your thumb pointing down when going from 3-4. It will make it harder to pull the stick towards you.
Got the idea from this video... works really well

sounds like your pistol gripping and its not the car just your hand motion. Pistol gripping can cause a money shift esp if your in the high rpm range in 3rd gear.
