No more guessing Pothole, here's the surprise

Don't worry, 128i is still in the garage.

I wasn't planning on doing this so soon, but with classic car/air-cooled 911 market going through the roof, I felt like I had to get on it before the opportunity got away. Long story short, my years of eying up the market turned into only two weeks of searching, and resulted in finding a really nice example of what I wanted.

The end result was a 1985 3.2 Carrera coupe. My perfect blend of unassisted steering, unassisted clutch, no ABS, no traction control, a wonderfully fiddly transmission, and mechanical everything. The steering is immediate and unbelievably feelsome, the shifter works at it own speed, the engine grumbles about everything, the car feels rock solid despite weighing ~2500lbs, cable drive throttle and clutch are perfection, the view is excellent and you can see what every part of the car is doing at all times.

It is the most fundamentally different driving experience I have ever had. Nothing relates in the slightest.

I'm never selling this car.

Few shots around the car:

Safely arrived home via the trailer. I saw no reason to subject it to driving through New York city and general highway awfulness. Plus, I want to give a thorough once over before I go on a 4 hour trip.

Yes, even at 6'5" I fit fine. I do have a steering wheel spacer on the way though to bring it up off the dash. And eventually I will probably swap it to the Momo Protipo.

Simplicity can't be understated. I've been pouring over Pelican for the last few months and I suspect that it really won't cost that much more to maintain than the 1er, especially considering the need for mods on the 1 vs leaving the 911 stock.

Yeah, to be honest my 987 desire has kind of evaporated now that I have this.

Truly jealous! I've always wanted an aircooled 911 and watched with great regret as prices have just kept climbing and climbing.

Congratulations, nice car!

My only driving experience in a 911 was helping a friend move from Kansas City to Philadelphia. I drove one of my cars the other direction and he wanted me to drive one of his back instead of flying. I just about said NO but then he said he wanted me to drive his 911C. It was a little older than yours and did not have the whale tail. We were to cruise 80 mph and drive it in a day. It turned to two long days with his incessant breaks but the 911C was a lot of fun. 100mph was about red line in 4th (5th was top gear). It tracked great at 125, the fastest I drove it.

On the same drive I drove his Bavaria a few times. I was surprised how similarly a fairly large 4 door sedan drove to the 911C.

They are interesting cars. On the surface, you would think they would feel like a tin can at speed because of their relative lightness. Nothing could be further from the truth though. From the sound the door makes to actually cruising at pace, they are rock solid.

It was on the short list of colors I wanted, but this one was simply too good to pass up. Silver and other similar shades were the only deal breakers for color.

So are you going to mod this? Maybe a euro rear bumper?

Coincidentally, did you catch the discussion on the 911 on AFTER/DRIVE...?

I'm a former owner of an older 911T and yes they are very special cars, truly like no other. Two years ago I wanted a 993 & looked long and hard but didn't find one before winter. This was the time when they were jumping up in price; when I started looking a good 993 could be had for $25-$30K. Next year, they were $30-$40K and I stopped looking & bought the 128. Nowadays smart money goes to the Carrera models of 1983 (I think) to 1989. Congrats on the car, its gorgeous and these cars are generally best kept stock except for updated Porsche parts (chain tensioners come to mind). Also I recommend joining PCA.
