Quote:
NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V067000

Manufacturer BMW of North America, LLC

Components POWER TRAIN

Potential Number of Units Affected 8,752

Summary

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2011-2012 135i Coupe, 1 Series M Coupe and 135i Convertible vehicles, 2011 Z4 sDrive 35i, 335i, 335d, 335i Coupe, 335is Coupe, 335i Convertible, 335is Convertible, 535i, 535i xDrive, 535i Gran Turismo and 550i xDrive Gran Turismo vehicles and 2012 740i and 740Li vehicles. The rear driveshaft constant velocity (CV) joint on the affected vehicles may fatigue and break.

Remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear driveshaft CV joint and, based on its production date, will replace it, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 27, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Quote:
According to the chronology that BMW submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company received its first complaint of this problem on August 2, 2016, when the driver of a 2012 BMW 750i xDrive reported a loss of power. An investigation eventually found the problem with the CV joint, and the company issued a service action for the affected all-wheel-drive 7 Series models.

On November 30, 2016, the company received a report of the driveshaft breaking on a 2011 BMW 335d that caused damage to the vehicle’s underbody and interior. Further research by the automaker showed three other incidents of the problem. An investigation indicated the same durability issue with the CV joint. Yet another case of this issue came to the company’s attention on January 24, 2017, involving a 2012 135i.

Huh... enter my VIN at the BMW Safety Recall page, and all I get is the air bag campaign. Perhaps once we get to March...

It states production dates affected for 135i coupe and convertible and 1 series M coupe are Jan. 17, 2011 - April 29, 2011.

My production date is April 27, 2010, so no recall for me. Whew!

Ah, good catch finding that .pdf. My car is outside the window (July 2010), so seems I'm in the clear.

Sure wish they'd get to my damn airbag...

Great, guess I'll be waiting another year for this recall too.

Still haven't got my damn airbag...

Odd the 13s are excluded. I didn't think there were any differences from 11-13.

For those waiting for the airbag recall, have you called BMW USA? I called them last summer, and by October my airbag was in and I was on my way. When I called I asked if I'd be provided alternate transportation, as Honda did when that airbag had to be replaced on our CRV. They said no, but would find me a part. Maybe that's the right way to approach them.

I own a 2011, still need the air bag recall. Although being in Canada, not sure how much slower recalls get done compared to the US. I'll have to ask my local dealer about this issue now.

This is not like the airbag recall at all. The entire industry is affected by the Takata airbag issue. That is a matter of parts availability in the MILLIONS.

Not odd. They've obviously identified some sort of defect in a period of manufacturing. That's what's being recalled.

Airbag recall is not comparable and doesn't say anything about BMW's speed in implementing recalls. Also being in Canada, your airbag is extremely low risk.
