1st Long Crank

Got my first long crank a couple days ago. I've had a couple more since then, the second one was noticeably longer. I've done 30,200km. Car was an 09 build and I've had the car just over a year. No other problems since Day 1.

I was having long cranks - got it looked at when i had my 15,000km inspection a couple of weeks ago. they kept the car overnight to cold start it and according to them "it did not fault" when they started it. so they did not replace the HPFP. they did hook the car up to Germany and do a software update and i have to admit since then the long cranks have gone. This was a North Shore BMW in Artarmon.

May be I should get them to look at it anyway so I can get the software update.

No, from what I've read on here BMW will only replace the HPFP when it actually fails regardless of how often or how long the long cranks occur.

My cars been running fine today though, if my HPFP is on its last legs I'd rather it go now so it's over and done.

Thats incorrect mate.. A few of us, including myself have had the HPFP replaced on suspected long cranks.

There was no way in hell I was waiting for a complete failure before replacement. Take it back to the dealer and tell them the fault is there but only at random times.

Mine replaced after much arguing and exhaust smoke @ a bit over 21000kms. 2009 build. I insisted on latest high volume pump, indentified by last 3 digits of part number (943). Wonder how long this one will last??

Thanks for clearing that up Zuzu. I'll keep an eye out for more long cranks, if it keeps happening then I'll take it in for sure.

Ditto Joe's comment. Mine was only long cranked for a couple of secs and they replaced it with no quibbles. Those wonderful folks at Col Crawfords

Did you notice much difference after it was replaced breville? And did you have to demonstrate the long crank or just tell them it had happened?

2008 or 2009 model? I've read somewhere on the forums that 09's (like mine) are being put through a battery of tests - and software updates - before they will replace it.

Both Breville's and my car are 08 models..(Mine being May 08)
I Didn't have to demonstrate the long cranks as they ran their own independent tests.

No notable difference besides less lag after the HPFP replacement, although my car had the software upgrade at the same time..

What he said!!

I did notice pickup from idle felt much improved. I wasn't concious of it being worst until I collected it the next day. I don't think I got a s/w upgrade, but I never asked!!

I recently had my car at BMW Sydney to address the issue. All they did was a software upgrade and it seems to have worked. The thing I've noticed is that when I unlock the car I can hear a noise (sounds like a fuel pump) that runs for a few seconds.

Haven't had a long crank in a few days now. I'm just hoping it dies soon so I can get the new hpfp and put this behind me. It's holding me back from future mods and I'm worried it'll go unexpectedly.

Thumbs down Noooooooo

Second long crank this morning FTMFL.

Hadn't driven the car for a few days and was quite a long one - maybe 5-6 seconds

No other error codes or problems and the common thread seems to be leaving it for a few days before driving. Not going to bother the dealer until it really plays up, or the problem is consistently reproducable.

Having said that, with the car being under warranty and since I don't rely on it day to day, I am not stressing out.
