"In most cases it's pretty useless. However, with very limited production cars it's benefits are you can keep track of total production, how many of each color there is, what number any given vehicle is in the production line(098 of 723), was the car a company press/ demo car, how many are even in existence as some are wrecked, stolen, etc. over the years. But mostly to preserve the history of the car in one organized location. That is why you see so many registrys of Pcars, Ferraris, and of course some of the more rare BMW's.

BTW, I get no personal or financial benefit. I hope this helps."

Metak I like this idea. You want to host it at 1seriesm.com? I picked up the domain last year when they confirmed the rumors but never really had a purpose for it, I just like to collect domain names that are related to the things I like for some reason. I can create a google apps account there that you can manage if you'd like (and I'll be happy to help wherever you'd like some help).

Also, if people are not comfortable providing their Full VIN, we can do a Short VIN and still get a production order of the 1M's coming of the assembly line based on the last 5 digits.

Let's do this!

Question How To Read Your VIN

Here is an actual VIN from a car being sold currently at a dealership. Let's break it down.

WBSUR9C51BVP76087

W=GERMANY, country manufactured
B= BMW, car manufacturer code
S= ///M, Vehicle type/division
UR9C5= Feature/attributes
1= VIN accuracy 'check digit'
B= 2011, Model year(this is 'B' on all USA/CAN 1M models)edit
V= Assembly plant code
P76087= Sequence of vehicle production as it rolled off assembly line. Last 4 always numeric.

OP.. you need to fix entry # 16 and 17..

The poster left out the "P7" 12th and 13th digit and it is not sorting correctly..

I suspect that P7 will be in all 1M vins ??? I could be wrong..

Yeah, I know. The problem is, then the production date doesn't make sense. I am still trying to figure out the sequence of production outside of NA, and currently people are worried about giving the last 5 digits of their VIN.

The North American sequence has been consistent so far...(75xxx-76xxx) I am just keeping the outside NA VIN's at the bottom so they don't get lost in the mix until I figure it out.

I see what you mean..

taking anothe look, maybe BMW said today( or this week) we make 1M's and then there were alot done, and then they go back to regular e82's. Then the gap in #'s would make sense. ??? just a though..

Any way,, good job... Good Luck... If this all works out It willbe a sticky for life anyway

As a note, we may have to be careful with VINs. Many register sites have the VINs listed where only the registered members can look at them. I don't know if the electronic key can be duplicated (remember the electronic key has a hard key in the end), but some unscrupulous people used to be able to copy a complete VIN, take it to a dealer, and have a new hard key made. Then we know what happened. Just food for thought....

I'm not saying to be paranoid, but it has happened in the past.

Hi

I am running a 1974-1975 Bmw 2002 Turbo register, I have 450 cars out of 1672 produced, so I fully support the 1M Register project.

But you need to register 2 letters + 5 digits to be efficient.
In Europe, some VINs are starting with VPxxxx but now they seem to use VIN in the VSxxxxx range...

[QUOTE=///Metak;9815330]I know this is going to be a lot of work to keep this oragnized, but I am willing to take on the task. As some of you know the Z4 Mcoupe Registry was/is a HUGE success with a similarly special limited production vehichle(1815total). I used to own a Z4 Mcoupe and appreciated having the registry as reference.

Here is a sample of a more simple version that I think would work well with the 1M. It would be accessible to anyone with a link but only editable by myself another person in case something happens to me and I am unable to keep it current.

There is 4 items we need to have:

1)Short VIN(last 5 digits)
2)Country
3)Production Date
4)Color.

Add my 1m

1. VP75913
2. USA
3. Production Date 3/08/11
4. Valencia Orange

Didn't work for me. VP76047 gave me a 118d convertible. If that's right, I'm going to be one disappointed owner when I show up at PDC on Thursday to
pick up my car!

Wow, 24 cars added to the db and it's split up evenly by color... 8 of each.
