Car Static?

I know we've had a lot of dust around in sydney recently, but I'm noticing that the dust on my car seems to be settling in a wierd way. Not that it probably makes any difference, but the car is LeMans Blue.

If I try to blow it off, or gently "dust" it off, it simply move it around, rather than going into the air.

It's like the paint has a static charge.

I've washed it 3 times since the bad dust storm, so that's not it. And I was noticing it before them.

It's really odd.

Anyone else noticed this?

I know it's daggy but what about using one of those anti-static earthing strips that hang off the bottom of the car and touch the ground?

i have noticed a fine film of dust tends to constantly settle on the car ... haven't tried moving it around as you have.

Dust can generate a charge.

For more extreme examples, look up the effects of wheat grain dust exploding.

Thanks guys.

Hopefully after we get some rain over the wekend, and everything gets a good rinse, it'll be less of problem.

Here's an alternative hypothesis for you.

The dust around Sydney is quite red which suggests there's a high iron oxide content in it. Perhaps there is some residual magnetic alignment in the iron oxide which is causing it to stick to the steel in your car body? Have you tried blowing the dust off the plastic bits too?

If that doesn't work, then we're back to the static electricity hypothesis.

Bryan, your logic amazes me in ways a woman's never could.

Interesting thought. I'll give it a go.
