I'm actually getting a 2011 135i M-sport for my wife, but it will have a proper transmission (manual that is) so I have nothing to rag on here. Its an awesome little car. However, I can personally say that I have dusted a dinan tuned 400 hp 1 in my M3, which has minor mods. The 135i Dinan car is no way even close to 911 territory and I'm talking regular 997. All the cars you mention are in a completely other league. I also have nothing bad to say about Dinan since I'm running their suspension on my M3 and its great. Don't compare apples with oranges.

That says nothing though. I've kept up with stock M3's a few times in my car (along with a newer E55 AMG and SRT-10), which doesn't really say much either. So many variables at play.

LOL....."dusted" is relative....an M3 does not "dust" a tuned 135i until it hits about 90-95mph...and even then it is not a dusting.....LOL...

My Stage 3 Dinan 135i
Apples, oranges or bananas... even Porsche stock 911's don't come close! Modified and tuned to peak at approximately 428 h.p. My car will jump 5 car lenghts... just off the line dusting an M3!

Where are you getting these numbers?! A Dinan tune doesn't produce anywhere CLOSE to 428Hp. |

not bashing the 1 at all. Just got a 2011 135i manual coupe for the wife. (Thats right a women even drives a manual) M-sport, BMW performance suspension and performance exhaust. Car sounds great and is a real blast to drive. I am bashing the steptronic though. How hard is it to put your foot down and just go? Its lacking soul in my opinion. A proper drivers car has 3 pedals. Thats just my opinion...... I will tell you this. from the clutch to the steering and everything else its lacking the sharp responsive feel that only an M car has. No matter how much hp you put in the 1 it will never give the same driver feedback and visceral experience that even a stock out of the box M3 can deliver. Again, thats my opinion. Having said that I really do love the 135i alot. I'm going to steal it from my wife tomorrow.

Alrighty folks, lets inject a little bit of numbers from "official" tests. CarandDriver tested a Dinan Stage 3 car with all the goodies:
http://www.caranddriver.com/var/ezfl...d9655cf548.pdf According to their numbers it does not "dust" an M3, especially one with an M-DCT. Compare the numbers to a 6MT M car and DCT M: http://www.caranddriver.com/var/ezfl...49021fcf2c.pdf http://www.caranddriver.com/var/ezfl...49021fcf2c.pdf With its extra 140lb of torque it still does not pass the M3 well into triple digits. I don't look down on anybody that mods their 1/3 series. It simply does not anihilate/dust/kill etc. an M3 in terms of acceleration or handle. Especially one with a capable driver. These tuned cars have a stronger midrange no doubt but not dramatic enough to perpetuate the results we keep hearing. I've been in a few and they do an excellent job of making the car feel different than stock.

second off, your right it isn't hard at all to step on the gas and breaks record times that people with the 6mt (yes including your wife which is a woman as you mentioned earlier) can't seem to achieve. Now please understand my fisty reply, but after reading that you are in fact bashing on the step has lead me to believe that you have clearly have not had enough time behind the wheel of one. While in the end yes I won't have the task of switching through the gears, I can assure you the connection between the car and driver is still there and any one who owns a step will tell you it's a blast to drive still. See before this car I had a 335i 6mt and it was a blast to drive, though a good deal and 30min test drive led me to get the step. Now while I am happy with the step, I will agree that a true sports car will always have 3 pedals.

With this logic, why not just buy something even slower that becomes "unsettled" even sooner? I'm thinking you bought the wrong car as well if that's what you're after. |

I'm willing to bet it paces an M3 but by no means will "eat it for breakfast" and don't even talk about the handling as you will lose your lunch and your house. But, otherwise, very nice looking ride.

Admit it, most 135i buyers are new to BMW.... While I don't believe in gambling, I'd bet money that many people are moving from say, a WRX, an EVO, a 350z.... into a 128/135i and bringing that same 'dude let's see how fast thing thing goes' mentality to it. when it comes to production cars, there are maybe 2-3 cars that can keep up with an M3.... anything can go fast on a staight line, but the magic of the M3 is the balance of power and handling.... STOCK is better than 99.9% Finally, IMO the only thing that would trump the statement above will be the M-badged 1 series. |

You have an entry level BMW, that is a Porsche 911...... You can beat it in a drag race but..... $100k > $40k car..... I'll trade my "tuned" 1 for a 911 or M3 any day of the week...... |

You really should put the car on a dyno to end all the chatter.
