lift hood at high speed

Hi guys, I just seen a youtube vid of the tune 1M race a R8, and if you pay close attention towards the end, you will notice there is about close to 1 inch lift from the front of the hood as the speeds are higher, looks very dangerous.

Here is the link, not sure if its already been posted.

before lift at 2:32 during lift at 2:59

I know there is hood lift issue someone was talking about while back, but never seen it in action like this.

mine's been tested to far higher speeds than the R8 dial shows.

Story of them " coming across an R8 " seems bogus..

yeah, I've driven higher speeds than that too, but from outside looking in at that is kinda scary, might have to find some mod for it lol, ie hood latch each side or something.

until I see other evidence... I'm chalking this up to the hood not being fully closed from showing off under the hood at their " impromptu" meetup.....

seems like it, but if you look at 2:32 like I pointed out, it looks flush with fender, so I'm assuming its close all the way until he pick up speeds and side by side with the R8. I just hope you are right.

This same video has been posted before and the hood lifting was discussed. Apparently it is "normal" for the 1 series hood to do that.

I'd be interested in a solution that doesn't involve exterior hood latches.

In Australia, our regulatory body requires that two fastening systems be present on any opening front panel. Scrutineering officials specifically check for this at club events, which is particularly relevant for purpose built and heavily modified race cars. Our modern BMW production cars already have two fasteners.

During a driver education type event, where motorsport regulations are not enforced (no scrutineering), my friend's carbon fibre bonnet bounced up - smashing the windscreen and damaging his roof. His modified R34 Skyline was only travelling at perhaps 160km/h (100mph).

In my limited experience, I haven't otherwise seen these potentially fatal incidents occur.

When the engine hood is closed and latched, at very high speeds the hood's edges will start to lift up. Its from all the high pressure air flowing over the headlights. It starts at about 120 mph and by 145 mph the hood is bouncing like crazy. I have driven as fast at 175 mph(GPS) and the hood is fine. But then again I am not looking at my hood at any speed over 100 mph! lol I have always wanted to make a GoPro video of this "hood lift" but I will need help from another car and it will have to wait until Spring time when the roads/Autobahns get better.

I'd say the hood lift at speed is more like three inches or so.

I remember driving side by side with @elsabor67 two years ago on the way to the 'Ring... he rang me up on the cell phone saying my hood was open! I told him to take a look at his hood, bc it was doing the same thing - and I hung up!!

The only real way to fix this "hood flex" - would be to install some hood pins.

IF you look at the new F2x the hood is secured on each side - just like the F3x's are. I think thats also why you must pull the hood cable twice in order to open new-er bmw hoods. As a safety feature.

Nah, that's just the 'front spoiler' automatically opening at high speeds.

.
I can attest to that. I almost shit my pants when I saw Dack's hood open like that and when I noticed mine I was like "WTF"!!!!!!!

Definitely thinking about hood latches in the future but undecided right now. We can do the video when ever you want Dack. Of course, when the weather gets better.

I was just north of 160 at Daytona last year and it stayed shut (or, at least, didn't fly open)!
