I'm not misquoting anything. All anyone has to do is just scroll up and they can see your statement, in context, where you very clearly said all cars do this. They do not. PERIOD.

If you're going to sit there and tell me that you've owned over 30 vehicles and they all needed the coolant topped off every 10k miles, I'm not sure what else to say to you. You're simply not telling the truth.

You haven't posted ANY relevant facts or information. All you've done is rant and rave in order to convince people you're right, when most of the people reading this are sitting there thinking to themselves "I've rarely ever had to add coolant to my new cars."

Feel free to carry on, but you're just spinning your wheels.

You're right.I thought for a moment someone would entertain my postulation if they had the facts to deal with. Fortunately adding fluid every xK miles is no big deal so I doubt it's worth even solving. Every 10K miles is a bit much, but no harm, no foul.

Hi,

I've had a low coolant warning light come up after 16,000m.

I've bought some BMW coolant and looked at the manual but I can't quite work out where the 'Max' level should be. How high up should the floater reach to? Maybe I'm not very smart but I can't figure out what the diagram on the coolant tank means!

Can anybody help?

Jack

I have a 2010 135I with about 13K miles and today the low coolant light came on for the first time. I checked and it was in fact low. I have been involved with a lot of turbo motorcycles and diesels and typically when coolant is low it only has two placed to go in a sealed system. A leak or into the crankcase through a leaky head gasket. In diesels and motorcycles running high boost levels a leaky head gasket is VERY common.

So rather than just assume all is well and top off the fluid I did a simple water test in the oil. I opened the oil filter housing and using a syringe I pulled in some oil. Using a digital scale that reads down to .001G I then weighed 6 grams of oil in a small metal tin. I then put the sample in a lab oven at 250F (way above the boling point of water) and allowed the sample to heat for 15 minutes. This is more than enough to boil any water that was in the oil sample.

I reweighed the sample and it was only .5% lower. Meaning there was only .5% of volatiles in the sample including water and other that are naturally present in the oil. So I now feel ok that there is some natural "use" of oil and that it is not going into the crankcase.

I am just posting this in the event other techies like me are worrying about the coolant loss. I guess I will buy some BMW coolant and top it off.

18,000 Kms and coolant light came on today and I am thinking of bringing it to the dealer. This is where I am a little confused, do I need to ask them to flush the system or just a top-off would do it? Thanks

You only need a top up. I bet its about a liter or so low on fluid.

Popped my low coolant light cherry today, car is about 9.5k. Was no where near a dealer so I threw in some off the shelf stuff, it didn't take much. Hope this isn't a recurring problem.

Hmm when i told the receptionist at the dealership about the low coolant level he was already holding a jug to top it off...so I guess this is a very common issue.

Didn't realize this thread still existed! BTW ever since the first top off handled by the dealer in my original post, I haven't got the light since. I've checked the level a few times and it has always been adequate. Maybe they just come a bit low from the factory (or original fill up), and then need to be topped off shortly after???

bumping this thread back from the dead

My 135 has 10,460 miles and the "low coolant" light just came on. I've owned a few cars but never had to replace coolant this quickly in a new car. My WRX never needed additional coolant, even after a 16G turbo swap.

But now that I've seen this thread I know this isn't uncommon in BMW turbo engines.
