Walnut Blast Turned Into Complete Motor Replacement....
Hey guys, just thought I would share this story with you. Still new to the 1-series community. I recently purchased a 2008 135i that was a lease return, my luck the one previous owner did not take care of her mechanically from what I have experience so far. That aside, I took it to a local certified BMW repair shop to do a walnut blast on the intake valves, that car has 55,000 miles so i figured its about time since I just installed a JB4 and BMS intake. Some how they forgot to tighten back one of the bolts they loosed to manually open and close the intake valves so when it was fired back up, the timing chain slipped and bent the valves lucky they are covering it all and replacing it with a used motor with 30k miles! So anyone who attempts to do the intake cleaning their self, remember to tighten that bolt back!!! Ill be getting the car back tomorrow, I'm scared its not going to be the same anymore! What do you guys think? I replaced alot of components on my motor so they are taking alot off of my original to put on the new motor. turbos, water cooler, coils, plugs, oil cooler, etc.

+1!
You are getting a car with only 30k miles on the motor. As long as you are not going to sell it later off in a hurry you should be ok. Just make sure you document the motor swap so that when you do sell the car you can explain why the carfax is pinging. Also while you are at it, speak to the shop and have them adjust what ever else needs to be adjusted or fixed on the car. Relax, she will be ok. She may have lost her heart...but she has not lost her soul. cool? and feeling better? |

This is a case study as to why to have a reputable shop do this. There's things that can go wrong in this process that can kill an engine. |

You really are lucky that it was BMW dealer doing that and that they will cover everything. But that is good lesson to keep in mind for everybody.
Can you explain what bolt they forgot and where? |

I'm wondering why they "loosed a bolt to open and close the valves manually" at all? Why not just turn the crank manually to open and close the valves?
I'm just as curious about what bolt this was. Maybe timing chain tensioner? But why would you do that... That's a lot of work compared to just turning the crank. You have to take the cover off, which probably means removing accessories (not sure, never done it, so feel free to flame), it's messy...

It wasn't a BMW dealer doing the work though. It was a "certified BMW repair shop" according to the OP.

Will the new motor be getting a walnut blast prior to install? I did mine at 30k....it needed it as far as I was concerned (have pics).
Second...that bolt? What the heck? They were manually turning it...sure they didn't leave the socket wrench on the harmonic balancer? When I did my valve cleaning..I used this method, very easy that way but if you get ahead of yourself....not good. If they loosened the tensioner.... Personally, I think the shop should be disclosed. Without a more solid explanation...this is not a shop any of us should be taking our car to.

Why should an ENGINE with 30K need that done? It's just a teenager!

Perhaps however, it's had 30k of use/30k in the making of carbon build up and in another 20k could start to show signs of it. Some cars go into 70k+ with no issues but if you have a 'new' motor, wouldn't you want the intake to be as clean as it was from day one, giving you at least 50k of clean motoring?

Front bank all looked like this...
Rear bank all looked like this... 30050 miles....like this "new" motor he is getting, I bought my car used with 25K on it...no telling how the previous owners treated it. I had a PPI done by a BMW dealer but they don't look for this stuff. Did I notice a big difference after...no, just a bit leaner as my trims were already struggling but personally, I don't want average...and all the little things add up. I've now resolved the trims and going to 100% meth, and have an OCC and an RB PCV so they should stay clean. The OP paid for a valve cleaning...since he obviously cares about the performance of the vehicle...he should get his valve cleaning! JMO ...and an OCC and PCV if you're going to be running the JB4...seriously If you want proof, I have more pics

I'm looking to do a walnut blast for my e93 and I'm located in St. Louis. Do you mind telling me what shop you went to? |

What bolt did they loosen? Sounds like they didn't know what they were doing.
Just pull the intake manifold, bump the starter to get the piston TDC, seal other runners and blast, it isn't hard just time consuming.

Not so much that they were being kind to cover it. More so that they could have really dragged their feet on this and forced the OP to sue them to get the car repaired. It sounds like they are making this a fairly painless process for the OP.
