Weekend Mileage

Hi All, usually I'm a bit of a hoon, doing around 128-130 on the freeway and 112-15 on the normal highway.

Due to the double demerit weekend, i drove within 10% of the speed limit, at about 118km/hr on the freeway and 107km/hr on the highway. Managed to get 7.6l/100km on the return trip from Tamworth to Sydney, this included city driving through to Camperdown.

Got it down to 7.4l at one stage. Not much overtaking, very easy acceleration off the mark etc. Reckon that's pretty reasonable economy.

Have noticed that new cars normally take about 20,000km before they become as economical as they'll be.. have seen improvements on other cars up to this mileage anyway.

Much better than 12.9l/100km in the city anyway!!

What are other's best results on economy?

how's the car treating you so far? Are you running it in soft (ie limiting revs), or just up it out of the box? pics?

car is great quite stiff (as it would be with sports pack and 18" wheels) but definitely liveable.

thrashed it pretty much the whole first tank on advice from the dealer. he said the car is meant to be driven, don't drive it soft, they're designed to be enjoyed straight from the start altho as a result my first tank only lasted 2 days lol.

have some pics and will upload them tonight hopefully

Cane my car after warming up.

Auto 135i 5000km - 13.5L/100km this tank. City 60kmh drives. As long as I don't stop, coasting at 40kmh on Bell street to the airport - I even see the economy get better. Strange.

Yeah, something i notice is when i have the computer showing current mileage, even just a very light pressure on the accelerator while coasting will bring it up to 18 or so.. I'm not sure how accurate it is really.

I have a 3rd of a tank left after filling up at the departure point, having done about 450km, which would mean i'd get approx 675km out of a tank. Just googled that the tank is 53L, which would mean i'm getting about 7.85l/100 on this tank on average. hmm, guess i have a little more than 1/3 left, should get about 700km. Though now i'm back in the city, all bets are off.

Same Takahashi, i've been driving it hard since new (only after warmed up of course), motor is nice and free these days. Goes even better after a good long distance drive to clean it out.

all time best economy was from my Renaultsport Clio, 5.9l/100 easy on long trips, and 8.4 or so flogging it around town. Plenty of grunt too.

my previous car (hyundai i30 diesel) averaged 5-5.5 L/100km in everyday peak hour driving always got over 900km per tank, sometimes 1000km, so about a month between fills.

quite a shock with the 125i especially since after every trip you can see the fuel needle in a different position

It will do that - i had about 12.5l/100k for about 2000km, then it just booted into proper economy.

City peak-hour driving is now around 9.5.

Driving back from the Hunter this weekend through Wollombi, I got to 7.9 before going up the hill.

I was told to cane mine.

Specifically:

"Because you'll be on the freeway back to Sydney, make sure you work through the gears and the whole rev range."

I hereby volunteer my little baby as a test subject for this hard-break-in experiment

I think it is pretty obvious that there is and always has been a variety of opinions on whether it is better to break a car in softly or harshly. This variety of opinion is proof enough to me that in the real world, it makes next to no difference.

And if mine has problems I'll be sure to let the world know
