Walnut shell blasting before/after, with pics // (New noise - backfire on upshifts)

Update: The cause of this was carbon deposits, which I just had cleaned out. See below for before/after pics - first two are before, second two are after. This was on a car with 58k miles, and the difference is huge. The engine runs much more smoothly and the hesitation/afterfiring seems to be gone. Very happy with the results .

***

I'm experiencing something new in recent weeks with my lightly modified 135i. On upshifts during hard acceleration, I'm more frequently hearing backfire-like noises - not the burble/popping on deceleration that we all love, but full-on louder single pops. No hesitation during driving, but I've also noticed a slightly rougher idle on cold start.

My car has the 6-speed automatic with Alpina B3 transmission software (so faster upshifts in manual mode).

Is this something a lot of you are seeing, or should I be concerned?

I had that done at the dealer on my previous 135i. The result was that piston 6 disintegrated and they had to replace the engine. I can't say the blasting caused it but, I will never try it again. The blown engine was the reason I traded the car, if it had happened 4 months later, the cost would have been ~$20k.

Ouch, that sucks. From what I have read, this is a recommended service for those of us with N54 (and maybe N55) engines, as long as it's done right... But I've never heard of that happening before .

This is what mine looked like when I did it myself with wire brushes and brake kleen. It seemed like It ran better. But I was chasing a misfire and it ended up being o2 sensors so I wasn't really paying attention to performance. Just wanted the misfire gone.
