6MT Rattling/ spinning noise

Interesting new sound from my 09 135i 6MT. Seems like in 1st or second gear- when the clutch is in - no sound, --clutch released - I'm hearing a spinning/rattling type noise. When I'm coasting to a stop - I can hear it - if I accelerate - it goes away. Tried searching forums - no luck.

Anyone ideas??

Throw out bearing? I had this happen on an old 318ti. The clutch functioned normally, but had to replace entire clutch system to get rid of the sound. Very fun.

Really hoping that's not the issue - but I'll research it. The fun's starting on this baby - variety of noises and chasing down two SES codes. 62k miles.

Probably the throw out bearing or clutch. The trans does this in neutral normally.

I have a 2010 6MT, and I've noticed some rattle when sitting in neutral with the clutch out. When the clutch is in no noise. It does appear to have gotten louder with more miles (at 65k). Is this normal?

Dual mass flywheel rattle. It's normal, but it's hard to say what volume is still considered normal. If you turn off your car in neutral with the clutch pedal out you will hear a similar "rattle of marbles" from the day the car rolled off the lot. But as you noted the sound while idling at a stop light does seem to increase with age of the dual mass flywheel.

My 2008 6MT has about 68k miles and does the same. It is nearly silent when the car is cold, but by the time it's warmed up (and especially after stop and go driving) the rattle can get really aggravating.

Thanks for the feedback --- I just don't remember hearing the noise last summer. It's only noticeable with the windows down and I drive be something that bounces the sound back. I'll have my indy check it out when I'm in for fluids.

After researching and watching videos online - this is the infamous N54 wastegate rattle. Spoke with BMW and my car is under warranty until 82k miles. Going in on Thursday to confirm.

Your wastegates are rattling at idle? Do you have low boost errors as well? 30ff 30fc?

I have to rev - and it's when I release that I hear it. My initial description was off a bit - it's not related to the clutch at all. I cal also hear it at idle with the hood open and when i disconnect the turbo vac lines it goes away. No 30ff codes yet.
