Rain and ZSP....
Rain and ZSP do not mix! We had rain last night and I was scared shitless. The car was hydroplaning and felt all over the road. I don't think I ever want to drive my car in the rain ever again.

As someone has advised drivers with ZSP before in this forum, when it rains, drive like a granny. I have ZSP and I have the same experience. The other night, it was raining here in the Bay Area my highest speed was only 55-60 mph when normally I would be driving in the 80-90 mph range.

I have the 330 w/ZSP and I think the car runs great in the rain. I'm on the east coast and have driven through some down poors inthe past 2 months. Car handles great at 80 mph.

I think the stock "high performance" tires do OK in the wet,
I'd had no hydroplaning at freeway speeds yet (other cars with summer tires I couldn't drive much over 70 without starting to lighten the steering) They're OK tires, but dont' have much wet grip, hell they don't even have that much dry grip |

It's the tires, not the car. You actually should drive any car like a granny when it's raining. A simple look at the number of accidents in the rain - and a day on the skid pan will change your perspective completely.

It's just the tires that come standard on the 325i ZSP. The 330i ZSP is perfect in the rain.

I have the sport package and have gotten quite used to the rain performance. One needs to pay attention when turning and accelerating at the same time, since the end of the car will come around rather quick. But once one knows their car it can be very fun at the same time. With all electronic aids enabled I think the dangers are minimal but an experienced BMW driver at least.....

It is not the car, it is the massive wide ass tire on the sport package. I am going to do my best to explain to you why I think it is the massive wide ass tire of the sport package that is not very water friendly. Take a toyota corrolla with thin tires and the car has a high clearance. Now take your sport package bmw with the wider tires and it also has a lower clearance. A thin tire will cut through water (almost like butter). A wide ass tire will not be able to cut through water that good, it surface area is too wide so it takes longer to channel the water from the tire suface so you have a better chance of hydrop. Plus your car is also low so the water does not have alot of room to escape so more water is built up under the low car. For a toyota corrolla, the tire is slim so it take less effort to dispurse the water from the slim surface. The corrolla is also high so more room under the car for water to escape. Sorry for the long post and I am not a engineer or anything. Just thank about my logic. Becareful when it wet...

No hydroplaning yet, but I did experience a controlled drift during a hard left turn. I felt stability/traction control kick in ... but it was kinda scary.
I am trying to go easy on the acceleration in 1st and 2nd with the wet Bay Area weather coming around.

Works fine in Engalnd and we get rain (big time).
Check your tyre pressures - I've noticed runflats struggle when under inflated in the rain! I also find the Bridgestone tyres are better in rain and ice. |
