Calculating Mixtures

Ok so I'm clearly oblivious to this stuff and I've been doing a little searching to try and figure it out.can someone post a proper set of instructions for running the cobb OTS E30 map on a 2008 135i. I have e85 and 93 octane available in my area. Id like to do the "safest, more Conservative mix" I just don't really know how to interpret the logs etc. any help would be appreciated.

If you don't know how to read the logs, just post them up here with the obvious channels or send them to Cobb for further instructions on how well its running.

And what about proper mixtures? How do you calculate E30 using 93/e85?

fuel capacity is 14 gallons, plus there is always more due to the filler neck so i will use 14.5 gallons

30% of 14.5 (14.5x.3) is 4.35 gallons of ethanol and 10.15 gallons of 93

I don't do any more than 4 gallons usually of E85. Seems to run the best at this mixture

Does it affect regular daily driving? Do you see a change in gas mileage if you're doing normal highway driving

You are going to take a hit in gas mileage no matter what if you plan to add in some E85. The performance benefit is worth it though.

I just found out that a station within 10 miles of my house sells E85, next time I get a chance i'm going to shoot for roughly 3-4 gallons of it after the normal 93 pump goes in. My car is running pretty happy (need to log though, haven't done it recently enough) but hopefully this will clean up any minor timing corrections and give a decent power boost. Without being tuned for it i'm hesitant to try more than 30%, though the winter blend is likely closer to E70 or so.

Except that you want to put in 30% ethanol, not 30% E85.

Gasoline is usually 15-20% ethanol, E85 is obviously 85%ish ethanol.

So estimating 10 gallons of fuel. You'd want to add 8.5 gallons of 93 octane and 1.5 gallons of E85. This would give you an estimated 29.75% ethanol content. Or E30 fuel.

E85 doesn't mean there is 85% ethanol in it, it means it can contain up to 85% ethanol. There is usually a disclaimer that states that E85 has a minimum of 70% though. This usually varies depending on the season (less ethanol during winter months).

Here's a method similar to how I test my mixture after siphoning some out of the tank.

Unfortunately in my limited research I've found that stations in Dallas the Ethanol content of my 93 is 1-12% out of 5 stations I've tested. I have limited access to E85 so I store it in a 30 Gallon container in my garage. Since E85 can really be between 70-90% Ethanol (mine tested out at 89%) and gas can be vary I would suggest at least testing the stations you regular fill up at. I use a similar calculator as gdub already mentioned to get close and then do a final check of whats in the tank after driving around for 15-20 minutes to get the mixture mixed up real nice.

Can someone else chime in on this as well? I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the OTS e30 map from COBB was designed for a 30% mix of E85, or roughly 4 gallons of E85 mixed with 93 fulll petrol.

I have access to full petrol 93, E85 and E100. I haven't run the map, but was planning on doing 4 gal E85 to the rest 93 in a tank.... would that be incorrect for this map? Should I be using the E100 instead.

I thought I had this all figured out but the conflicting informaiton in this thread has changed my mind.

Can someone verify?

E30 means a 30% mixture of Ethanol and 70% gasoline.

I'm hoping I wanted to go the last two weeks they were open but it rained one week and the closed the next week. I hear the 1/8 mile track is open year round not sure how well it is but would hurt to go to just to work on 60 foot times as I haven't been to a strip in years and these cars aren't the easiest to get grip on.

yea i took my last one to the 1/8th mile in denton, it was a 6mt stage 1 cobb v301 map. i ran i think fastest 8.5, don't remember what speed, but it wasn't the easiest thing to get off the line, my best 60' was a 2.1 on RFTs.

this one is an auto. Once I figure out what's going on with my misfires, and put downpipes on I'll be ready to go. I've got some buddies that want to go too, one is a jb4 w/ DCI and DPs on e85, one a stock camaro SS (i already destroy him) and another with a is350. I'll pm you when we go in the spring to see if you want to join

No he didn't, check the pumps, Gas is supposed to be 10% max and E85 only needs to have a minimum of 70% Ethanol. Given the variances discussed on many forums that E85 can go from 70-90 range of Ethanol unless you measure it yourself you not going to know the exact mixture. The only thing saving everybody here is the fact that the DME is so good and quick to pull timing before it hurts anything.
