squeaking dash

Anybody else have any problems with their dash making any squeaking or vibration noises. The roads where I drive in dallas are horrible and I've noticed the dash is starting to making some noise sometimes I'm not sure if I should try taking it into the dealer or not. Not sure if they will complain about the M3 suspension parts and the Koni's or not. I really didn't expect this chassis to have a problem even though Dallas roads beat my Acura TL to the point of going through several sets of suspension before the chassis was making so much noise I traded in on this on.

The side vents in my dash squeak badly, only covered by 1 year 20000km warranty is what BMW Canada told me so I didn't get them fixed. It sucks because I work for GM and even a bottom spec Aveo/Cobalt/Cruze/Sonic gets a 3 year 60000km for squeaks and rattles.

I'm in Plano, TX and had the same issues. I had to find every single creak and rattle by pressing on peices of my dash. The good news is I found them all and have gotten rid of about 90% of the noises.

You won't need to take many panels off to fix it, if it sounds like mine did.

1. Some of the sounds were coming from the a-pillar, where it meets with the dash in the corners. Stuff a good amount of foam in there to act as both a spacer and sound deadener.

2. The majority of the sounds were actually coming from under the front trim piece that runs across the passenger side. Pull it off, and you will see screws under it. The space between the dashboard and screws was making all the noise.

Just loosen the screws a bit, and stuff some foam in between the seems, then tighten it back up. Do it for all four screws. This should help quite a bit!

Gently pry the front trim off from left (steering wheel side) to right. Once you see the exposed area show below, push around these areas and in between them. If they make the slightest noise - there's your problem! Put peices of foam in between the screws or seems, and then put a bit of foam on the back side of the trim piece before you put it back on just to be sure.

NP! I have some miles on my 1, so I would think the areas I pointed out would be the most common areas for noise. My glovebox made some noise too, or so I though, but I found much of it was coming from just above in the areas I pointed in the pic.

I only have 25K and it started about 21.5K I just put 3500 in two weeks on an east coast trip. And I know the previous owner lived in Dallas area but put alot of his miles on out of state so it seems like these roads beat it up in less than about 5K miles.

FWIW, the right side of my dash squeaked on bumpy roads. I found this thread
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=716109

and the next time I was at the dealer I referenced SIB 514510. They said it applied to my car and the tech performed the fix (lubrication). It hasn't squeaked since.

Glad it worked for you. Also use it on your door seals. it will keep them lubricated and prevent icing. I'm glad I could help.

rough roads will make a little noise but the only thing in my 11' that bugs the shit out of me is the center console (glorified arm rest) creaks with every shift.
Clearly not having my forearm on it would help but thats the way I drive a 6 MT.

Going to remove the console this weekend and look at all the mounting and try some lubrication at the hinge.

For mounted dash | trim ect. what kind of "foam" are you recommending? Source?

Thanks boys

My rear vision mirror vibrates and rattles on bad roads. Anyone have any ideas how to fix that?

It happened to me. I opened the armrest and then removed the inside trim (it was kind of tricky to get off I thought I broke it but I didn't) removed a few coins that were hidden inside, and reinserted the piece. Somehow, this eliminated the squeaking noise every time I put my arm on it.

Thanks shah269 i was too scared to take off my trim myself and my dealership gave some lame excuse why they didn't want to take the panels off. I still have the creaking center console and would love to get a diy to fix this also a rear window or convertible top clunk on bumpy roads. My dealership changed my convertible top the problem went away but it came back a few days ago.

So it worked for you?
I don't know I've been doing it for about 10 years.
First on the 1.8T Jetta and my X's Beetle. Worked like a charm.
And on the 135i...works very well to keep things quiet and clean.
But what I love about is how quiet the car gets after espically when you wipe down the door seals.

Yes it worked for me. I was going crazy because the car was so quiet when i drove off the dealership lot and then a few months later i hear all this coming from a mint condition car. i gave it a try on my A pillar meets dash point and on my front trim piece that runs across the passenger side. i sprayed it gently and let it run in all the crevices pressing on the A pillar gently while it soothed inside. Its been 2 weeks now and not a sound from my dash and its still winter time.

One time there was this loud high frequency rattling noise from the radio head area. Drove me nuts for 2 hours.

It turned out to be my cup holder. The 4 tabs in the cup hold was rattling against the coffee I put in.

The other time there was rattling sound on the door somewhere. It turned out to be a box of Altoids I kept in the door pocket

Worked. You are a god among men. I was about ready to drive my car off a cliff.

(PS: I'm not a fan of the shiny dash so I just squirted some into the seam between the dash and the A-Pillar trim and around where the dash meets the vent housing and cleaned off the remaining residue.)
