1M as a daily driver vs 135 coupe

Considering a 1 series. Have only driven a DCT 135 coupe for a short period. Like spirited driving (previous sports cars and Italian bikes).

Wonder what actual owners think - - is a 1M a good daily driver, or would a 135 coupe w/ M Sport Pkg. be better, all around, w/ features like a sun roof, folding rear seat, etc.?

rear seats fold in the M... if you dont mind the manual then there is no reason to go with the 135. Only reason I daily drove the 135 was bc the M was in the garage.

Folding rear seats should be available on the 135 as well.

I think the bigger question is whether you are okay with a used 1M vs a new 135.

I have yet to drive a DCT 135 (actually, any DCT car for that matter) but I'd really like to.

And whether you would prefer paying a big premium for a used 1M vs a new 135.

Has any stock used 1M sold for under $50K yet?

There's a stock BSM 1M with 1450 miles in the Roundel this month for $59K + shipping (located in Virginia).

If I was in the market for a new 1 series, it would be a 1M. The problem is finding one and the price they generally go for.

About the only difference I see between the 2 is the aforementioned sunroof and available DCT. (Ignoring the M's suspension, brakes, diff etc.) I previously owned a 135i (MSport - Manual) and traded it for a new 1M to use as my DD. What I disliked about the 135i was the harsh ride of the run-flat tires, my 1M has a better ride even though it has a more performance oriented suspension compared to the 135 MSport. Do I miss the sunroof, yeah sure, I always drive manuals so to me the DCT does not come into play.

Both cars are excellent DD's, to be honest if cost is no object try and find a 1M, if you want to save some serious $$ I suggest looking for a slightly used 135i MSport and then spend a couple of grand on some goodies.

If you don't mind not having the Sunroof, and don't mind a little bit more exhaust sound - which I rarely use when I had my 135i. 1M is a better DD period. The droning can be fixed by replacing N55 mids.

money factor.. ....

I have Dinan stage 2 in my 135 and I have a blast..

But, to each his own.. I would love a M version, but new, its just a bit too rich for what you get. All told I'm in about 44k with a very nicely optioned car...

Would I get a M, sure in white to match my 135 (: But, used, too many dealers were up charging way too much.

And I love my sunroof...

The 1M makes a great daily. It's just like my 135i was but better in every way, besides cost.

Besides being less a pain in traffic jam and offering better ownership cost , the 135 doesn't have that special thing offered by the 1M : aura .

1M is a far better DD than I anticipated, comfortable and compliant when your not pushing it and as aggressive as you want it to be with MDM + M sport on a twisty road.

Also I love it on the highway, the torque for passing is great as well. Its just a fun car and usable.

Life is short. Go with the 1M. If you have to think about it too much you probably shouldn't be driving one anyway.

The quad-exhaust , the overboost , the chassis , the brakes...each time you press the start button you know you're driving something special . and that is priceless ...

I don't know, the 1m has the potential for becoming a collector car if the run remains limited.

If that's the case you're better off keeping the 1m as a weekend / track car and keeping miles low. Just seems like a waste to put 100K commuter miles on a 1m.

The for sale adds are full of people who didn't think too much and are now trying to unload m3's they truly can't afford.

The assumption was that the OP has the financial resources to purchase either car. Otherwise why would they even be considering the 1M?

Not too many people know the true cost of owning an "M".

Appreciate all the reponses! Even w/ the range of diversity, there's validity in all of them.
1M cost could be somewhat diminished by an offset of selling our '06 3 Series convert, optioned w/ the 6 spd. "zhp" pkg., but I'd still be relegated to "used" @ around $59K+, and up, since I can't take the $20 & even $30K mark-up that some dealers are charging (make that "gouging") buyers for new.
I didn't mention location/weather as a factor, but given that I'm in Colo., would the 1M be less of DD (knowing, of course, that I'd need to mount winter wheels/tires, as we've done on our E46)? Or, does that come down to the notion of not risking an issue w/ a limited edition car that should, ultimately, increase in value/significance?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Terracotta interior

Wondered if, by chance, you had any good pics that you could share of terracotta? If we do a 135, that's the color we've been considering, perhaps w/ space gray.
Dealer samples, and forum pics here and elsewhere seem to vary. Is it really like the color of a leather football, would you say, or otherwise?
Thanks

If money is no problem and so is manual shifting than the 1M hands down is the MUCH better car in looks and in performance ....I respect your opinion on not copmparing the 1 with the 1M but.....I dig the 1M and have had the opportunity to buy one 3 times and have not made the purchase for a few reasons...As a few have mentioned "MONEY"..There is a big difference between payments ..in my case double for the 1M as i bought my car used CPO with 9.000 miles on it for a tad over 30g...my payments would double...and my car will be paid off in a couple years.. Saying the 135i and the 1M should not be compared is IMO bizarre. Especially for its street road manner..Not the track where of course the 1M's M3 suspension would shine, but for the street they can be compared and so can there speed. I do believe my tuned car will stay with a stock 1M pretty well and possibly even beat one especially with paddle shifting in a sprint to 80.
Would i love a 1M..of course but for me the 135i for the street is very well suited to my needs and the extra 400 buck as month that i saved not buying the 1M is enough to buy my wife a new car...which i did ! Yea, i LOVE my sunroof to.

I saved 15 grand buying my car from a BMW Corporate Auction over new and CPO's it...that's a big monthly savings...IMO look for a slighly used car and SAVE. If money is no issue 1M all the way!!! I do not think a new 135i is worth 46 grand new and 54 for a vert....The 1M is though.
