I think they are great cars, and I used to be a big VW guy, but I still have never been able to get over the (to me) boring bread-box look of the Golf line.
There is no sculpting, nothing aesthetically interesting about them.
For that alone, I won't consider it.
I look at the profile view of my 135, and I still love it. I have never looked at a Golf in any trim and thought "that's a good-looking car".

The mkiv gti has a normal body but is a blast to drive. Which is why I threw a 337 bodykit and a 337 wing to improve the appeal.
So if you have a golf, throw a bodykit on it, lower it and change up some colours then you would have a sharp looking ride.

So true, I had a MKV R32 before my 128i and I grew so tired of the boring shape so quickly (less quickly than the DSG though, after 2 weeks I wanted to change the car because I realize I could not stand that transmission - and I bought the car for it). That being said I would like to test drive a manual R out of curiosity

I would definitely keep the 135i. The M235i is not a true 'M' car. I expect arguments here, but IMO it is just a refreshed 135i. The Golf R will be fun to drive, but it is no BMW. I have owned four VW's and they were all comfortable and fun to drive, but they were far from BMW in terms of engineering, performance and drive characteristics.

+1

There are cars that are fun to drive, and, cars that are fun to drive and look spectacular. The 1 series is the latter.

Once you've had filet mignon, bologna loses its allure.

I think the better comparison is: Once you have had a good rib steak, filet mignon looses it's allure.

Go for the flavour, not the perfect texture.
