Calgary BMW: KM's added during "service"
Trying to figure out how 3km's got added on the car today. Seems like nothing, but when you consider that the only thing needing to be done was swap the front scotchguard.. and the car wasn't even cleaned or washed.. this seems a little excessive.
Anything I'm missing here that goes on during servicing?

Do yourself a favor, RECORD the KM on the service log when you take the car in (or the work order). Then they KNOW you are keeping track. Next, reset the average speed without telling them. MOST folks won't remember/know to reset it if they've been 'misbehaving' with your car.
"So... why is there an average speed of 120kph when you've only added 3 kms to the odometer?!"

Good call.. Never thought of that. I did have them record the kilometres upon entering service. 3km added.
Next time I'll reset the average speed. That's a really good idea.

I also feel your concern. I picked up my car yesterday from Calgary BMW and an additional 10 km were added to the odometer. I was getting service done for a rattle in the sunroof, so some driving was to be expected .... not sure if it really merited 10 km though.
I'm actually booked in again next week as the replacement part wasn't available yet. I think I might have to try the avg. speed trick .... although this method obviously isn't full proof as service techs can just as easy reset if themselves as well.

I think if you go in the BMW menu (4 icons), where it shows you the mileage and KM left before tank is empty, there is the avg speed, if you go into that, there is a button to reset it. At least that's how i reset my mileage (L/100KM)...

Excellent.. will do. I'm going in next week to get my crank time checked out. Hopefully I don't get charged if nothing's wrong (which there obviously is). Sounds to be the FP.

YUP, I remember when I got mine back... and it had an extra 14 km's. I asked next time in, and was told "we test drive"
LOL Next time I bring it in, I am going to hide in the trunk and when they rev it up and zoom around, back seats will flip down. Just wondering what I sould wear... hmmmm Does anyone have a trunk monkey suit? |

Standard procedure after completion of service is to test drive the car--lighten up people.

Certainly 14km or less than 9 miles is within reason. I've asked the Service Manager to drive my car home in order to put enough miles on the car to observe a particular issue (50 mile round trip).

I'd prefer them test drive to make sure the problem is fixed. My wife's Acura was having issues with the ECU. They said it was fixed, I drove all the way across the city to pick it up. Paid for it, drove less than 1 block and got a CEL again. They didn't test it at all.

I was told that if they go over a certain KM, they will put gas in. LOL
Actually I don't mind if one trusts the dealership. The problem comes in when they don't inform us. A simple phone call, explaining the issue, and they need to do a proper test drive. Along with telling us exactly who is testing the car. I used to get this at Toyota. I really appreciated it when they ask before they do stuff. If I get a call from the service manager explaining they need to take it for a test drive, I am ok with that. I just asked who was doing it... I would get back a responce of Mechanic Nick is working on your car, or who ever. No big deal. It's when you bring in your very precious car, and on picking it up you find extra KM, and nobody tells you why. That is what bothers me. I had to be the one to find it, and when I did, no good reason other than. We test the car. I brought mine if for PDC failure. Why drive 14 km for that? LOL EspressoBoy |

I had it repaired a couple of months. Apparantly it was a faulty sunroof cassette which had to be replaced. Unfortunately, BMW didn't do a very good job. I'll be taking it in again in a couple of weeks as the sunroof is not lined up properly although only an asthetic issue. They've also introduced a couple new rattles from inside the roofliner which was my biggest concern when they started the initial repair. Oh, and the bottom of my driver side A pillar trim has a small crack in it which I'm sure was from careless removal and re-placement of the trim pieces when working on the sunroof.
