Convenience Package - Top Opening/Closing

I have a 2012 BMW 135i E88 with the Convenience Package (auto opening door handles - finger lock - auto trunk opening). In the manual it says that I can open the convertible top and roll down the window by holding down the unlock button on the key fob and it also says I can close the top and windows but holding the lock button on the key fob.

I can open the top and windows with the key fob, but when trying to close the top everything in the top starts popping - sounds like a bunch of latches and relays are working. The cover for the top starts jumping and only goes up about 6".

I asked my local dealer and he said the top does not go up with the key fob because of a safety reason. I stated the manual says I can raise the top with the key fob. Dealer says the manual is wrong. I said, well if it was locked out for safety reasons, the key fob should just not work in the closing mode, not to have the top mechanism go into spasms trying to open.

I contacted BMW Customer Service and he says it should work and he tried it on a 2013 E88 and it worked. I said I need confirmation and not guesses. He says he will get back to me. I get a call back in a week and the rep says it should NOT close with the key fob. I ask him about the manual and he does not know. I ask him why it is not just locked out electronically instead of going into spasms and he does not know. I ask him why the 2013 works and not the 2012 and he does not know.

Does anyone out there have a 2012 135i E88 with the Convenience Package that knows how this is supposed to work or could test the opening and closing of the top operation?

Do you have the key access on the door handle? Have you tried putting the manual key in the door and holding it in the lock position? Not sure if this works for the top, as it puts up the windows / closes moonroof on my car. Maybe there is a response unit that isn't cooperating with your key fob?

I know you said you aren't looking for guesses, but thought it might be worth a shot.

my 2012 works to open and close - the only time it had issues was after sitting last winter not being run for weeks - it got about halfway open and stalled.

It did start, but threw me a low battery warning after that - top worked fine with the engine running. A battery tender fixed the issue

Might check the battery in the FOB as well

I know I can put it up and down with turning the key in the door, but I have the Convenience Package and I can put it down remotely with the key fob and the manual says I can put it up and down remotely with the key fob. Down works fine but up it goes into spasms and only goes up a little way. Both the dealer and BMW US says the manual is wrong and apparently just on my 2012??? I can understand it being cut out totally with the fob, but way does it try to raise it and go into spasms and stall?

If I were you I would go to a BMW dealer that has one on the lot and try that one - if it works on that one it should work on yours and then they can document the problem, and maybe even fix it!

Sounds like a problem with the 12 volt car battery not being able to provide enough current to operate the closing servo motors.

Does the top close OK when the engine is running?

I also had a problem with the hydraulic pumps leaking. The top would open OK but needed help closing.

I have a 2013 E88 with the convenience package and mine opens & closes from the key fob. Unless you find a similarly equipped model year E88 on your disbelieving dealer's lot I think you are going to be be ignored. Do you have another dealer you can go to?
