Oil question
Hi guys,
my oil low indicator popped up yesterday so I checked the level on the computer and its close to empty. I've only done 10k kms so seems a bit strange. Should I take it in to BMW for a proper look or just top up the oil myself? Apols for the basic question but I'm mechanically inept.

Hi harppon,
At 10K my oil indicator was down by only 25%.. Just took the car to BMW and had a oil and filter service done.. I would be booking in with the dealer for a service ASAP.. |

I had an error message thrown up @ about 3000km. Came up and said i was dead empty. Stopped the car, restarted and was fine. Quite strange, dealer couldn't give me a reason either.

No can't see any oil in the garage but it has been a fairly hard 10,000kms i guess. A few track days thrown in etc.
Cheers guys I'll just take it for an oil change.

Was you car parked on a slope at the time. You will find that the low oil light comes on in this case.

Track days and hard driving, and still on original oil after 10,000 kms???? Ummm, I'd be changing it as the oil is the first and only line of defence against self-destruction, and hard usage puts the oil through conditions that accelerate it breaking down - not mention the extra dirt build-up caused by the extra wear when parts are extra hot.

It is normal for new engines to burn oil threw there run in period.
But i recommend to change the oil and filter at those km's regardless. And if you continue to do track days you may want to change the oil to the Castrol edge sport which is used in all M cars. Edge sport is designed to protect the engine at higher temperatures. |

Cheers, appreciate the tips guys. Aussieracer I guess it might sound a bit careless/ignorant but I sort of assumed that all these cars are driven fairly hard and that BMW will factor this in to their maintenance schedule. I will put my hand up for being the dunce on this. Live and learn! Hopefully no serious damage is done.

I'd say it could be the same fault I had - call the dealer, they usually offer a free checkup in this period (well, Kloster did anyway) to make sure all the nuts are tight etc. |
