Newbie - two questions!

Hey Guys - I just picked up my 330 last week...love this car..I just have two questions..

1. Are you going to wait until the E90 tell's you it's time for a oil change or go the route of changing it every 1500 miles?

2. Which winter and tires are you guys running on your 330 sports?

Thx
M.

Marven: This is a controversial topic, I might do a first oil change at 3k...just for peace of mind and the rest as per maintenance schedule. Also taking the opp to address some faint rattles/squeaks/clicks....

The last time we discussed this it became as heated as the "Do you support Bush" thread! Everyone has an opinion. I guess if you bought the car, change often. If you are leasing, do what BMW says.

Someone actually got their oil tested (search its on here somewhere) and showed that changing it more often is a good thing.

I think changing every 1500 miles is overdoing it, are you doing a lot of racing? 7qts of synthetic every 4-6 weeks, that can add up.

Out here in the country, we don't do a lot of stop and go, freeway cruising around 2500 rpm should be easy on engine, don't see any problem going 7500mi.

thx guys - makes sense..I will change more often - how about winter tires..are you guys using the same 162 rims? Acutually I might use the 162's as well since I did get the wheel & tire insurance, so if the rims get damaged they'll replace them? Any thoughts on running the 162's in the winter?

So I've actually resisted answering those kind of threads simply
because as others stated, everyone has its own opinion.

However here is a little story, and you can all draw your own
conclusions from it.

The E90 is my second BMW (just got a 330i) as I own already an
E36 (318i). Both great cars. My E36 has very few miles for its
age - around 70K. I was driving on the highway and usually
when the road is open in front of me I tend to go fast. I had
reached 110mph with plenty in my pedal still to go but the car
refused to increase the revs and go any faster even though I
tried. Did many things but no luck. On my trip back, took the
car to BMW. Got the chief service mechanic to drive it around and
he came back with the bad news:

Camshaft, rocker arms and valve springs needed replacing due
to wear caused by bad lubrication But how can this
be when all the servicing was done by BMW, at the indicated
service intervals? Well lets just say that the mechanic
suggested I change my oil every 3500-4000 miles no matter
what and no matter what car I have unless I don't mind paying
$4,000+ every so often or I don't want to drive that fast which
is when I would normally notice a damage like that. And that
everything else is BS according to him regarding changing the
oil at such high mileage intervals because he has seen this kind
of damage too often (including E46).

As I said, everyone has its own opinions about this but after
having an experience like that I plan to change my oil when the
odometer reads 1500 miles and thereafter every 3500-4000
miles.

sc.-

Thx..

Thx sc - that's good advice..I asked in the first place b/c that's what I believed..someone once told me that as long as your change your oil regularly and perform regular maint your car should last a long time...I just wanted to know what everyone else was doing and if they were following BMW's advice....i read somewhere that new cars are supposed to last approx 10 years..I'm like WTF : my last bimmer was 17 years old..you figure with new and better technology they would last even longer??

While BMW does not use a break-in oil , changing the oil and filter after the first 1000-1500 miles is a good idea. All new engines will create a certain amount of contaminants during this period. After that every 5000-7500 miles should be adequate with the synthetic oil.
As long s you use BMW products, oil and filter, you can do it yourself or have a garage do it without any warranty issues. Keep receipts just in case.

Winter Tire and wheel setup is Dunlop M3's (RFt) on Borbet 17 x 8.5 TS's ......... very pleased with performance (and look) in all conditions ......... could run year round on these if I was forced to ...... but anxious to put 162's back on in a week or two.

THE Canadian classic starring John Candy? funny, it's one of those movies that I always hear people talk about, but never got the chance to see it. Friends have told me that it's darn hillarious.

Be warned a stereotype is coming:

Nearly everyone in the US thinks the Capital is Toronto. That was my favorite part of the movie.
