Pulling Turbo Tuner chip before warranty

I'm taking out my intake and Turbo tuner chip before I send my car in for a wastegate rattle investigation (and hopefully turbo replacement).

Are there any tamper codes that will reveal themselves when I remove the chip or while it's in there? Should I unplug the battery prior to removing the chip?

The only thing on my car that will be there that's not stock is the exhaust (RPI quad exhaust). I'm hoping everything pans out okay.

An old, relatively lame plug & play system that probably just attenuates turbo boost signal:

I think I have this one or the first rev of it.

Take it off then get a jb4 or Cobb.

I'd clear all codes uninstall it drive it for at least 100miles to make sure the system is ready. After all that sell that chip and by a JB4 or COBB.

This post isn't about helping me find a new chip. Everyone knows the JB4 and the Cobb systems are the better ones - and JB4 isn't legal in California.

This post is about getting my car to look pristine clean for the dealer so I get my warranty.

If the dealer wanted to it can find out if you had a tune installed or not. They can just read your computer and it will show everything. If they wanna be dicks they can do this. I would just try to find a mod friendly dealer close to you

.. or go with a supported tune such as PPK or Dinan unless those are illegal in Cali.

However, if you've chipped it they will find it if they want to. Nothing is invisible to my knowledge. Pull your chip, erase what evidence you can, and roll the dice.

If the dealer wants to determine whether you've messed around with your DME, they'll figure it out. Will they go to those lengths for a turbo replacement? I have no idea.

Pay to play.

Nothing is legal in Cali.....but thats a different story.

But if you can clear any codes, clear them. Remove the "tuner" and take it in for the work that needs to be done. Hopefully the dealer will do the work and not worry about looking to see if the car was messed with.

You can also see if the dealer you're taking the car to is a mod friendly dealership but investing a little time to search the web or find one that isn't far away from you that is.

My buddy's cousin's uncle's nephew used to be a BMW mechanic for six months eight years ago and said they know you had a tune. He wouldn't say how though, but man, I'm so sure it must be true!

Fairly sure my car didn't have a tune - just that turbo tuner sensor chip. I believe all it did was attenuate the turbo boost signal - it didn't change the fuel mapping or anything.

If you set a tuner code, it can't be erased. But removing the intake and "chip" will help in getting assistance for turbos.

I've cleared the tuner code with my JB4 G5 many times.

The first couple replies made me laugh
Turbo Tuner was popular before most of you have even joined this forum but eventually got outdated and surpassed by JB+ and Procede.

Fun fact of the day when the Juice Box (JB, JB+ and now JB4) was released, it was called the TT which referred to Terry Tuner (Terry the owner of Burger tuning).
The naming created a big confusion because the Turbo Tuner was refered to as TT also.

^ I felt a little dumb putting the words "Turbo Tuner" into my title, knowing I'd get flak, but yeah - that's literally what the box I pulled out said.

Anyways, some good news.

Brought my car in with the RPI exhaust but w/ the AFE intake and Turbo Tuner chip uninstalled. Stevens Creek BMW (service advisor was Sarah Scherzi - responsive, nice, familiar with the N54 waste gate issue and didn't charge for the 2 seconds it took to diagnose) did it in 3 days. In on Friday morning. Out on Tuesday afternoon.

Car feels way more responsive on the low end and I can finally enjoy the sound of the car without the stupid waste gate rattle. Awesome.
