When I toured Leipzig they said they keep files on who built each car at each station the car travels thru at the factory. So they know who makes mistakes and after so many problems are detected... they can reassign said worker to some other dept IF they keep making mistakes. lol I wonder if the same guy(or gal) was responsible for all these cracks. ?

Haha...true! But its like that in any industry. If they poke a yoke the process this wouldn't happen so I blame the quality/manufacturing engineers, unless that operator wasn't following the work instructions. They should have a torque driver set to a tested value.... that would eliminate this issue. I am surprised that we haven't seen this in the M3....

I was going to say, I could swear in these high tech factories they have a specific tool for the specific job set to very specific values..... who knows

Small crack on my driver side mirror, though on the forward edge of the flat plastic that is on the same plane as the window. Who'd have thunk it??

I just took a close look and found 2mm crack on driver's side, 3mm crack on passenger side. November 2011 delivery. I have only used the power fold feature 2 or 3 times.

I'll wait until they go all the way across and take it in for replacement.

Just checked mine and both are cracked. Both have a VERY faint crack on the backside of the stub that sticks out. It looks like a thin blonde hair on the surface. See picture 1, right where the flash reflection is.

However, the passenger side mirror seems to have a bit bigger crack with a slight gap between the two sides of it on the top surface of the stub. See picture 2.

Like was mentioned before, the cracks are likely caused by the hardware on the backside being torqued too much, or possibly just a poor design with insufficient plastic wall thickness.

I think i'll wait until mine get worse until I take it in to the dealer. It really is pretty difficult to notice unless you are really looking for it. Has anyone taken theirs in yet? If so, i'm curious if they replace the whole mirror assembly, or just the triangular mirror base.

My dealer have replaced both my mirrors.... But (always a but) I could notice some strech in the mirrors brackets already when I left the dealer so now after a month the problem is back and both sides are cracked again. I have talked to my dealer about the issue and they will replace them again but this time they will check with BMW central to see if there is something wrong with the mounting instructions.

In my case they replaced the whole mirrors.

You guys had me worried...no defects on mine but I realized that the power folding mechanization doesn't really touch or affect this area...are some of you thinking that because of the structure twisting or torque when mirrors fold that might be causing the cracks?

Took the 1M in to my friendly local BMW dealer on Saturday to show then the mirror cracks and they were most helpful in ordering me a new pair of replacements

Expecting a call later this week and then get the car in to have them switched over.

Been a busy (and expensive) first 10 days of ownership....

Eibach Springs fitted
Geometry set
BMW Performance black grills fitted
IND Gloss black side repeaters ordered
MILLTEK Sport full system ordered
Pair of wing mirrors being replaced under warranty
Pair of Michelin Pilot Super Sport rear tyres ordered

Cheers, Chris

And I do fold them all the time (like 4 times total a day, home and work) and I could not spot any cracks yet!

For those who have had their mirror replaced at the dealer, did they transfer over your old mirror caps on to the new mirrors? Reason I ask is because I have 3M clearbra on my mirror caps and would hate to lose them. Although now that I think of it, there is also some clearbra on the black sections of the mirror, too.

From one of the 1M's on our Swiss tour. A few of the the cars all had these cracks just starting to occur. Seems like most were on the passenger side mirror.

Same mirrors but mounting hardware could be different. Using M3 spec settings might be over tightening the mirrors in the 1M like Dack suggested.

Must most definitely have rung a bell at BMW in the meantime. Too many side mirrors feature minor cracks. Very recently also a Belgian 1M now reported minor cracks. Both side mirrors of his 1M will be replaced under warranty. Over and over again the same spot as reported repeatedly over here: the upper part of the small stubby part that does not move. Was probably no good idea to let Chuck Norris mount the mirror triangles at the Leipzig factory. I did not check mine yet.

At our euro 1Addicts meeting at the MeilenWerk, I also found cracks on two of the 1M's there. Most cars seem to have cracks on the passenger side. I don't know why. The two owners even knew of this thread, but did not see the cracks until I pointed them out!

Same here.. I didn't notice the crack until .. Thanks Dack.

Dealer changed the mirror out this past week. We shall see how long it takes before I have to get Dack to inspect my car again.

So how many mirrors have to be fixed before they come up with a fix??
