DIY: blackline taillight installation

here is what is needed to do the installation.

30-45 minutes time
5/16 socket??? (it fit pretty good didnt have the metric size)
1/4 socket wrench
1/4 extension
screw driver (flat)
plug remover (no neccesary, but good to have)
1 can of squirt

you can start with what ever, trunk or sides. i started with trunk.

unplug all the plug with the flat screw driver.

use your hand or the plug remover to remove the plugs.

now you have access to the back of the taillight.

unscrew the nut seen. theres only 1.

remove taillight carefully. do not force, it should come out easy.

now, replace it with the blackline taillight, make sure the side piece is hook around the side of the trunk, see picture

the inside part hooks onto the panel inside, see in picture (poor shot)

now tighten the nut. it should pull the taillight down. make sure you hand tight this piece. do not over tight, you might break something.

for putting back the carpet piece. just reverse the previous steps.

here is a picture of the black line taillight with the stock side.

not bad!!!

now for the side, remove the carpet cover.

pull from the upper corner downwards, (this is for the driver side.)

now the back of the side taillight is expose

unscrew the 3 nuts.

remove taillight.

and replace with blackline taillight

sorry no pictures, camera ran out of battery.

for the passenger side, turn the black knob like, it should expose the battery of the car. this side is much easier. before putting things back, check all the bulbs to see if it works, so you have to take the panels out again

***you have to align the taillight center yourself. hand tighten the side and adjust to the way you like. then tighten with the socket.. hope this help someone. here is more of the finish job...

sorry pictures a little blury.

Nice writeup! Thanks very much for sharing. And I think they blend in very nicely on an SG!

Thumbs up Clear Lenses.

Those tail light look great.
Do you know if these are available for the e91 model.
If not are you able to let me know where to get them for e90.

Regards,

where in the world is Leicestershire? i am in the US, i had a hard time looking for these. they where imported from germany, so if you are near there, a bmw dealer in germany should have them for you. i know nothing about the e91. we dont have that car here.

Is installing the Blackline Taillights just simple "pop-in-and-pop-out" procedure? Or does it involve some wiring?

Oh cool. But if there's no wiring involved, how do you "plug-in" the blackline taillights so that the light bulbs are plugged in and able to receive electricity?

E90Fleet means it's a matter of unplugging the light socket on the old one and plugging in the new one once it's installed. It's super simple.

No "wiring" as in splicing wires or anything that's difficult.

very nice.
It actually reminds me more of the old style Ci.

Back end now has more of the 'classic' BMW look to it.
(IMO at any rate)

the holes are not precise. it have alot of play. if you just put the lights ion and tighten it up, it will not line up. if you are very lucky it will line up. i had to snug the nut and move the taillight around until it looks line up. then tight the nut.
