Does this sound like wastegate rattle?

2009 135i N54 with 33K miles. Stock except PPK v2.

Fast ticking/rattle when engine revs are falling. Happens all the time. Started in the last couple thousand miles.

(Hoping it's the wastegates because my car is off warranty)

Thanks, before posting this thread, I had that video loaded in two different browsers and could not (and still can not) get it to play past 22 seconds. I was trying to find some videos of wastegate rattle to compare. I know about the warranty (thankfully as posted, I'm at 33K).

The way he said you can find out for sure is to let the car idle and unplug the vac lines from the two canisters in front of the coolant reservoir. If its the WG, the noise should go away.

Just to be clear that ticking when engine starts is normal but what we all don't want is ..the ticking after throttle is release?

No, it was after a drive, oil and water temps in the 200s.

If out of warranty, how much does the repair typically cost?

Thanks.

Karl.

Out of 4 year 50k warranty? Or you're past the extended manufacturer turbo replacement 82k warranty?

I've read online between $6K and $7K at the dealers. The turbos alone used to be just under 2K each, but they've dropped significantly in price. I think Tischer has them for $1100 each with a core exchange.

That's one reason why the 8 yr/82K extended warranty on the wastegates (that came out of the class action lawsuit) is so valuable to folks (like me).

I've got the same thing. Dealer says they don't warrant for the sound though. Have to wait until the turbo actually fails and then they'll replace. Does this sound right?

In reading the e90 threads on the issue, experiences greatly vary. Some dealers won't do anything, others will replace wastegate actuators and others get all new turbos. And some folks have had the 8yr/82k extended warranty declined by BMW due to flagged VINs for modified vehicles.

The extended warranty indicates tech should "refer to the current version of ISTA/D for applicable test plans and repair instructions", so I think the outcome is also highly dependent on the results of the test plan.

I have an appt. at the end of the month and I'm hoping for new turbos.

I took mine in a 3 weeks ago for the ticking/rattle. They replaced my turbos at 36k miles. I was out of the 4yr/50k warranty but since the turbos were extended to 82k miles I got new turbos.

Take it in.

Got new turbos. Reading my paperwork it stays both wastegates and actuators were inspected and found them to have clearance in excess of 3mm on both banks.

Still curious about the specifics of the test plan -- I suspect folks that have had issues not getting them replaced might not have "qualified" per the test plan (i.e. they weren't bad enough... yet). But that is just conjecture on my part.
