M Boss Says "We Sold More Than 5000 1Ms"
Did everyone noticed the thread in the bimmerpost: Interview with the M President Dr. Nitschke, during which he is quoted saying:
"Is it safe to assume that will there will be a successor to the popular 1M coupe? We sold more than 5000 units worldwide and we are thinking for a successor, but we haven't made a decision yet." Whole thread is here: http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=660894 I am wondering if this is true or just a mistake? Maybe he wanted to say more than 3000 which would make more sense. Jason you have posted this, in case you are reading, could you comment? |

the philippines only got 4-5 1M cars allocation. everything else we imported from the US.
although they plan to make an M version of the new 1series, once more the car is bigger again than the E82. each time the car gets bigger, i think it spoils the essence of what is supposed to be a compact rocket, IMO |

I am still feeling like standing with the Artemis' comment about free drinks at the Geneva Show!
Otherwise I agree that if the 1M's popularity teaches a few things to BMW, that's just great. |

Almost double the original target total sounds suspect to me, but it is coming from the boss' mouth. It would be interesting to know where the addtional 2,500 1Ms went since BMW's largest market received less than its original target of 800.

BMW and BMW M have a product strategy and product roadmap:
Build comfy, more efficient cars under the BMW and M banners with more sport than the next 'sporty' competitor. For more money of course. Along comes the OG Pyrat - Dr. Kay Segler and sneaks a devil of a car past the Board. It's cheaper, less comfortable and more 'sporty' than anything they offer at the time. Woops. Now,... how the hell will that be worked into the product strategy? In the corporate world you either tow the party line (current strategy) or you truly understand the market and try to up-end the strategy. Lets hope the new guy picks up where Dr. Segler left off. Getting the units produced wrong by 100% doesn't bode well. I might be more hopeful if I see the new guy sporting the sweet M jacket we say Dr. Kay Segler in. |

UK - 450 Canada -220 AUS - ~150 That still leaves 3440 for rest of world. Don't think China, Russia and other countries bought more than US or UK. Unless the middle east sheik's bought by 100s, seems on high side to me. Last edited by LeMansM5; 03-13-2012 at 02:51 PM.. Reason: Fixed UK numbers |

Initial figure that surfaced was 2,700 1M's.
Production increase around August/September 2011. Later this year we will know the final figures.

I would guess at least another 100 were used for press release/testing, PCD use, BMW executive toys etc. 5000 worldwide is not that much in the big picture, there has to be a minimum amount so the car is not a total profit loser for BMW.
With the world population currently close to 7,000,300,000 people; owning one makes you one out of 1.4 million!
