Holy crap. I normally miss Toronto but I'm glad I don't have to deal with ice storms and really cold temperatures anymore in Seattle.

It was the weakest crank I have ever heard from the car. Did fire up the first try. Drove an hour to work. Car sat outside for 7 hours. Started fine. But I lost the clock on start up. I also noticed the HVAC is not blowing any air if any of the buttons on the left is pressed (green lights). Only front defrost is working (orange light on the right). Also only blowing hot air, cannot blow cooler air even if the display says it is. I guess it is a good position to get stuck at. I think the rear defrost also stopped working on the drive to work. I guess I might need a new battery? Lost clock. Car is smart enough to not let the rear defrost work when weak battery? Any thoughts? Thanks |

I would have started it at least once a day and let it run for a bit. Anytime its below 0, I run my cars for 15-20 minutes to make sure everything still works.

I also have a battery discharge warning that won't go away even after driving for a while. I noticed that my comfort access is intermittent at best. Have to use the remote to unlock the doors and open the trunk at least half the time now. My car is less than a year old and the cold seems to have killed the battery. |

Like some other of my Canadian fellows, we had a few days in early January at -25 to -30 Celsius here in Montreal. We went south for some sun and warmth so when i got back to cars had been sitting in that cold for about a week.
My 2010 128i started up right away, and drove off no issues. We got a few feet of snow but with the Nokians, i can still get around no problem. Parking is a bit of a bitch because the car is so low to the ground. My 2012 X1 started up as well, but the crank was more laboured. I also got the car on a lift light as well as the battery light. Put the car on the charger, took about 6 hours to get back to full charge and it's been running like a champ since. All the warning lights went away. I've heard a few of these stories on more recent BMW's loosing charge in cold weather... |

I live in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario... the past week we have been dealing with -32C with a windchill of -40C, I've read that we can get Oil-Pan heaters for our cars, and that our cars have trickle charger installed? I haven't been able to find information on any of these.
Any help would be appreciated. |

-25 to -35 with the wind and the car sitting outside there's been 2 mornings this winter where it chugged a second than started. Every other time fired right up.
Really wish I had a garage |

Right now it's -4F according to my car a few minutes ago. It was -15F last night. Toasty apparently compared to you, lol. Is brake squeak normal in this cold? They never squeak any other time, only when it's 10F and colder. |

We used to use dipstick heaters when it got really cold growing up in Kansas. But with no dipstick.... You could use something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Kats-24150-Wat...productDetails There is a review where a 3 series owner says he like it. He stuck it to the oil plan. Or you could use a block heater if you can find a section of heater hose to plumb it into. They also sell the pad heaters to keep the battery warm. I guess if you wanted to be best prepared or treat you bimmer the best, you could warm and charge the battery and warm the coolant (better than warming the oil since the oil doesn't really like really high temperatures it might see in contact with the heater). Everything except block heaters seems to be out-of-stock at Amazon. Amazon also sells a temperature regulated outlet that looks neat and is only $15. You can get the that only turn on a 0 or 20 or 30 degrees and turn off 15-20 degrees higher in ambient temperature. The other thing people apparently do is turn them on a couple hours before they will start the car (with a timer). An advantage of a heater for the water is your heater will be on as soon as you start the car. The other thing we did growing up was pull the battery and bring it inside. That is good for the battery but on modern cars no battery would also affect the vehicle - you'd be in backup on the computer when you hooked the battery up.

I find the brakes do squeak when its cold, as well the suspension sounds a little rough (or might be it's time for coilovers...approaching 100 000 kms) |

I've noticed that the DCT clutch seems to slip a bit when I initially take it out of Park. I've also heard a high-pitched whine or tone that may be electronic, or one of the infamous vacuum leaks that others have reported. And for sure, the overall ride is much firmer when rolling down the road at -10 degrees F!

My brakes seem squeakier as well in this cold dry weather. I was wondering if I needed replacement but had them checked a little while back and they were fine.

I've never had any squeaking of brakes on BMWs above 5°C and below about -15°C, but all of them seem to have some squeaking between those temperatures at one time or another, especially if the brake dust hasn't been pressure washed out from around the brake pads for a while.

I've often been told and read that fresh oil helps the situation. Flows easily reducing wear both on the starter and engine internals....
I think 5 min of idle can't hurt, it is cruel to drive off as soon as a vehicle is started in such extremes. February - can't wait til this winter ends, or at least relents with the "polar vortexes" |
