US Owners Manual & Training Information & Technical Details !!! A MUST READ!

Here we go! This is the BMW internal training document on the E82, to familiarize their technicians with the model. Seems to share a lot with the E90.

Enjoy!!

With the adapter cable, the USB connection is used to control the iPod and the jack socket for audio playback. The reason for this method of connection is that music tracks obtained from iTunes are subject to DRM and can only be played on the device to which they were downloaded. The copyright protection prevents digital transmission of the music track via USB.

The Y cable is supplied with the vehicle and also maybe ordered through the parts
department.

Here's a bit of interesting news. Not sure I like it too much:

Quote:
The 135i is equipped with a trim weight on the rear bumper. This component contributes to an overall improvement in axle-load distribution.
It appears that the e90's front components are identical to the 3 series too, making aftermarket development that much easier! I already have some aftermarket suspension bits on my e90 that's getting traded in that I may be able to re-use... I have H&R Sport springs that look to be a perfect fit... We'll see though.

Quote:
For the most part the E82 and E88 front and rear suspension are identical to those of the E9X vehicles. With the exception of the 135i sport tuned version.

Fixed that - now, what is the composition of and weight of the rear trim weight (the old - we're going to make this thing 50:50 ; -)?

The following steering systems are fitted in E82 vehicles:
• Conventional rack-and-pinion steering with Servotronic assist hydraulic pump (vane cell pump) this is the standard steering for all 128i and 135i vehicles.

But its not 50:50. BMW's website says 47.7:52.3. Maybe they put the weight there to keep the back end from bing to unruly, like the porsches:ionoThis is a WAG and is in no way based on any factual information)

More Gold!!

Quote:
In order to satisfy that demand on the part of performance-oriented spirited drivers, as of March 2008 the 135i will be fitted with the NEW DSC function program that simulates the action of a mechanical differential lock. The system uses the typical BMW open type differential and is comprised solely of an electronic intervention program inside the DSC.

When the vehicle is in tight bend the DSC applies the brakes the spinning (inside) driving wheel, the torque is then transmitted to the outside wheel which is carrying most of the load, optimizing power and maintaining vehicle speed trough the corner. The new function implemented in the DSC control module is thus, in effect, DTC without modulation of engine output. The DSC and DTC functions are unaffected by it.
BMW High Traction DSC applies brake to the Low Traction wheel that loses traction.
Indisputable proof of new functionality to the DSC!!!

Quote:
In comparison with a mechanical differential lock, the advantage of the new DSC program function is more than just the fact that it is substantially more cost effective. Whereas a mechanical differential lock is permanently active, this DSC Function only comes into action only when required and if the DSC/DTC is switched off. Nor does it add to the vehicle weight and fuel consumption.

Furthermore, the function does not affect handling stability in DSC or DTC mode and the familiar understeer tendency produced by mechanical differential locks is also avoided.
The feature will also be introduced on BMW 3 Series models with higher performance engines at a later date.
Not in the 3 series cars at all right now...

Just about the only thing this doesn't mention is the oil cooler. Fantastic work, Rook! I'm working on getting it uploaded here. There's a problem with vBulletin. You did nothing wrong...

Dam - I've spent too much time editing in the past few months. First major spelling booboo - page 4, VAVOS instead of VANOS.

But we do get the Brake Energy Regeneration - that means we may be restricted to certain replacement batteries.

I don't like how it says as of March of 2008, does that mean delivered after March of 08 or built after March of 08?

They told me that the underbody had been cleaned up to reduce lift - w/o seeing it it was hard to tell just how good a job they did. Look at the undertray on page 6 - NICE.

These cars won't be delivered or serviced by any US BMW Centers until then. They are not going by build dates, just availability.
